Hello All,
None of my one or two or ... Series III Land Rovers came with any tools such as jacks or factory supplied wheel braces.
Every time I have used a 27 mm socket to undo the wheel nuts on various vehicles I have had to hit or jostle the socket to get it off the nut. There is a fair amount of play and the force of loosening the nuts causes the socket to slip just a little bit on the flats of the nut. This locks the socket onto the nut.
Would getting a 1 1/16 Imperial Socket be a little bit more of a snug fit? Or is it over 37 years of use the wheel nuts just need replacing with new ones. None of the nuts appear to be that rounded off.
Or did Land Rovers Series III in Australia have a different sized wheel nut than their UK based counterparts? This means by using a 27 mm socket I am using the wrong size anyway?
I do not want to damage the wheel nuts any further than they are now.
Kind Regards
Lionel

1 1/16" is only 0.0125mm smaller than 27mm, so I doubt it will help.
Australian S3 had the same nuts as elsewhere, and these continued on into coil sprung Landrovers (steel wheels).
Best suggestion I can make is to get a hexagon rather than 12-point spanner (impact sockets are usually hex, as are most purpose designed wheel braces).

Any wheelbrace from a Range Rover classic, Disco 1 or Defender. Like John I'm sure they have 27mm. I use a 27mm hex impact socket on a 3/4 breaker bar.
You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
Hello All,
Thanks for the response and in particular the information that it is the 1 1/16 inch socket and to get a hex impact socket!
The next task is to find one available to buy in Bundaberg tomorrow.
Kind Regards

Hello All,
As mention before I seem to be in the habit of purchasing Land Rover Series IIIs that are lacking their original tools and jacks. Most frequently they are missing their seats too!
I have noticed that there is a set of empty clips on the back of the cab wall. Does anyone have a photograph of what is supposed to go there? It would be much appreciated.
I am not sure if it makes a difference but my Series IIIs utilities range from 1975 to 1980 models.
Kind Regards
Lionel
Yep, I just went to a scrappers & bought a Disco tyre spanner. Works fine & cost about the same as a 1 1/16" socket.
And Beast had the starting handle on the bulkhead behind the seat backs. I suspect the original tyre spanner went there as well, but I haven't seen one.
From memory, behind the seats, from Series 2 on, lives the starting handle, jack handle and wheel brace. The standard Series wheelbrace was a socket forged in one piece with the handle bent at about 45 degrees.

Hello All,
I made a visit to my favourite tool and engineering supplier shop. Asked for a 1 1/16 inch Hex Impact Socket 1/2 drive and the sales clerk walked right up to a display unit picked one up off the rack and said "there you go. Anything else?" So one thing ticked off the list. The socket is a very snug fit too
Still I am left wondering something about old Land Rovers. Do you reach a point where you can blink at them and they do not cost you money?
Go and do something trivial, such as, "I will just loosen the wheel nuts". So I look behind the seats - nope no wheel braces there. Look in the tool box and I only have sockets that don't quite fit. Off to the AULRO forum and then off to the shops I go.
Kind Regards
Lionel
