Yes it can be done.. the LT77 works well in a Series Vehicle. Transfer box ratios will depend on the engine, tyre size and diffs you are using.
As for needing a Stage One V8 front axle... That's a nice to have but by no means a must have... Have done several Series conversions using the LT230, and none have had CV's in the front axle. The first was a Series 1 88" with the old 19j Turbo Diesel (predecessor to the 200Tdi.. Not sure it was available here), the second was a VW 2.4 6 cyl turbo diesel powered Ser 2 SWB, and the current one being built is SWMBO's SWB Ser 2 with LT77, LT230 and 200 Tdi (see projects and tutorials).. You will get a slight amount of kickback through the steering when in first or second gear on full lock under acceleration, but nothing bad, and its a little reminder that you shouldn't be 'giving it some' in first or second under full lock anyway!
