    Solex Corrosion Series 3 1977

    Hi All

I have started restoring my Landrover and after opening up the Solex I noticed a lot of corrosion.

    How did it happen?
    Will it affect the Solex?
Do I need to get a replacement spare part?

    See photos

    Thanks

    Craig

Water in the fuel and left standing for a long time

    Uncertain, but likely

Best if you can - may be a hint that you might want to fit the original (probably Zenith - these are available new). Solex parts may be very hard to find.

Probably most Landrover parts suppliers - I saw them at All 4x4 at the Landrover Expo last year. Model is 36IV, but just specify the engine it is for. A more specific location might help to say which supplier would be best.

This engine was originally fitted with the Solex you have, which is probably the best carburettor - but I have not seen it for sale new, and pars seem hard to find. But any of the carburettors fitted over the years are good if in good condition.

A minor problem if changing from the Solex to the Zenith is that you need an adapter as the mounting "ears" are at right angles on the two carburettors. The adapter should be readily available, perhaps second hand, which should be OK since it is non-wearing. This may not be necessary if you have a cable accelerator linkage, but will be if the linkage is a series of rods and levers - not sure when it changed.

I suspect that the change from Solex to Zenith to Weber was because of availability rather than anything else, although the change to Weber may have been to help meet emission rules (which probably means it is compromised elsewhere!).

    Hope this helps,

    John
