HELP !!! Where was my Landy Made?

    Hi guys

As you know I have recently picked up a 1977 S3 to restore, I have however noticed the following.

The plate on the passenger side says it was manufactured in Solihull and is a Diesel.

The plate in the engine compartment says it was manufactured by Leyland in
Australia in 1977 and is Diesel.

The engine is however a Petrol ... I am assuming this was changed by someone, or was it???????

Where was the Landy made, Australia or England ?

    Chassis number : 90813032A

    Number on Engine : 279562

    Please see Pics attached

    Thanks

    Craig

The series land rovers were mostly CKD (Complete Knock Down) which means the major components were imported from the UK (Solihull) then assembled here in Australia using quite a lot of local components. So you will have both Solihull and Leyland Australia on a Series 3, earlier ones would have things like Pressed Metal Corporation for the NSW ones and such like.

So I would say that the engine has been changed since both plates match for engine and would go with the Solex carbie being on a series 3 as in your previous post.

    Cheers,

This is the official decode of your VIN:
908 Model: Land Rover, Series III
    Body type: Basic
    Wheel base: 88in
    Engine: diesel
    Model years: 1972-1979
Destination: Completely knocked down (CKD), right-hand drive (RHD)
    13032 Serial number
    A Design: Unmodified

Info from here Clifton Scientific Text Services, the Netherlands

So yes, it started life as a diesel, and was manufactured outside the UK.

There's a few people that will have access to extra information that isn't shown above, hopefully one of them will come by soon.

    Hi Craig

    All is easy the explain.

Land Rover is a Company based in Solihull England. Many of the parts were made there and sent out to Australia, then combined with Australian made parts and assembled into a complete vehicle. Most likely at Enfield in Sydney.

This is why the plate inside says Solihull but the compliance plate says Leyland Australia.

SIII diesels use the same engine block as SIII petrol 4 cyl. So it is very easy to swap one for the other.

What you need to find out is the chassis number. It is located in the places I mentioned in my PM, use a wire brush to clean the chassis bracket it should reveal a number or two. You can clean up the number with a small flat file rubbing lightly. Use a flat file so it doesnt damage into the number impressions.

Once we have confirmation the chassis matches the number on the compliance plate we know your vehicle will get through rego.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

The number in this image is not your engine number, the engine number can be found on the sloping face of the engine block just in front of the exhaust port for No 1 cylinder, cheers Dennis
