    New or overhaul kits ??

Do I buy new parts or overhaul kits? ... I am looking at buying overhaul kits rather than new parts .. for example petrol pumps.. clutch and brake master cylinders ??? .... overhaul kits or new unit completely ?????

    Hi
Depends on the condition of the old parts
Fuel pumps can normally be repaired but brake components are different
If the insides are rusted and pitted you could have them re sleeved in stainless steel and rebuilt but that is expensive
Personally if in doubt I would replace mc, slaves, rubber hoses, shoes, springs with new parts and machine/replace the drums if necessary
You need the best brakes you can get

As Phil B stated, regarding brake cylinders it depends on the condition of your parts.
I've resealed lots of master cylinders, wheel cylinders etc. with no problems. I find that if the part is cast iron and not rust pitted you can lightly hone and re-seal. If it's aluminium I've had slightly less success.

If you go down the re-sealing route make sure you track down some red rubber grease for re-assembly.

The next problem is the available replacement parts, some of the aftermarket stuff isn't the best.

Though sometimes the replacement parts are cheap enough to not warrant buying a rebuild kit. My 2a's fuel pump was a good case, cost me around $30 for a new pump, glass bowl and all.

Ditto. Fitted a brand new fuel pump to my SIII for $80. Had the brake master cylinder overhauled by experts as couldn't get a new one. Fitted new slave cylinders and brake hoses.

    Cheers

The ABS people said they couldn't get one in a reasonable time so I told them to go ahead and overhaul the old one. Probably cost a little more, but we needed to get going and didn't want to wait for a (possible) replacement.
