The filler connects to the tank via a hose that is inside the vehicle. Likely leaks are at either end of this or the hose itself.
Also, leaks round the fuel pickup or the sender, both on top of the tank, are likely to be smelled inside.
As far as I know all Series have a vented fuel cap, and in the front tank of Series 2/3 there is a separate vent hose from the top of the tank to just below the filler. This is also a potential source of leaks.
(Some of the above may not apply if the front tank is a non-standard addition)
