    SERIES 3 at Corowa

    Hi all,
    will be driving my Series 3 to Corowa for next weekend.

    Well, I took Cookey up on his offer of a drive of his series 3. Got to say it is the nicest series I've driven - even though it is pretty much an original Military series 3 with a ton of KM on it, with the new extractors and exhaust system and the disk brake conversion. The 2.6 is smooooth, and has a torque curve that defies logic. It pulls easily from below 1000 RPM in top gear all the way to highway speeds - you don't need to change down going through roundabouts. . People who bag out the Rover 6 don't know what their on about, they are so much nicer than a Holden 6 IMO. Brakes work like car brakes - pulls up straight and easy, just like a series doesn't...

    I can highly recommend both the brake conversion and the extractors for anyone wanting to improve their ride. A set of each made the trip home with me for Cam's series 3 project.

    Trip to Corowa driving impressions

    Well, had a great weekend in Corowa, looked at heaps of Landies and caught up with lots of friends both old and new. Ended up driving down on Thursday and returning Sunday afternoon. On the way home I stopped at Gundagai to refuel and fitted my GPS to do some speed/economy calculations. First thing I noticed was that the Series speedo is a little optimistic. At a genuine 100km/h it reads 107 km/h.
    The engine will pull to 5500 rpm (maybe more but no point in going higher).
    With 7.50 tyres (military Steelflex) inflated to 45psi I obtained the following results.
    1st gear at 5500 rpm 43 km/h
    2nd gear at 5500 rpm 71 km/h
    3rd gear at 5500 rpm 105 km/h
    In 4th gear it does 29 km/h per 1000 rpm and on 2 occasions I have seen 5200 rpm, so I will leave you to work that out for yourself.
    From South Gundagai to home is 343km and when I refilled next morning it took 52 litres, which works out to 15.16L/100km or 18.63mpg.
    This part of the trip took 3hrs 20min at an average speed of 103km/h or 64mph.
    I am extremely happy with these results and it's great to be able to travel along the highway with the main flow of traffic. In the near future I will do some fuel consumption figures at lower speeds (but who wants to go slow when you don't have to?).
    Over the coming months I will do some further mods including more porting work, electronic ignition and carby adjustments. There is still plenty of scope for more improvement.

    Yes the speedo doesn't read that high on a six and I have also seen the needle without any more numbers to point to.
