Thread: My Series 3 Project

I want to let Cam tell the story as much as he can or wants to. Basically, the plan is a ground up rebuild, shiny top quality body and paint, disk brake front end, put an original Rover 6 back in it, hi ratio transfer case, comfy interior, with carpet, sound proofing, stereo.

So, 2 years hard graft, plenty of the folding stuff and we'll see what we end up with.

At the moment, the body is completely off, all mechanicals removed apart from the diffs. Engine and gearbox are sitting in the chassis, but only gravity is holding them in there. They would be out by now, but when I cleaned the garage up and made room for the vehcile, I put the engine crane away first - in the back corner which is now buried under a tonne of other stuff - rescuing it is tonights job...

Well, found something very interesting today which I am going to incorporate into the build. Now, this isn't for everyone, as the vehicle will need a custom wiring loom to make the most of it, but as we are going to build a new loom from scratch, then this jigger is perfect.

It I designed for motorbikes but can be used in cars as well. It replaces almost all the fuses, and let's the functions of the indicators, ignition, starter, lights and brakes to be operated through 1 wire from the switches to the control unit, so I can have a very uncluttered and simpler wiring system behind the dash.

It is also an alarm and an immobiliser.

It is the Motogadget M-unit V2 and m-button - motogadget

Just been fitting one to a friends bike so he can eliminate the majority of the wiring from the handle bars. Works like a treat.

At €300 for the pair, it isn't cheap, but it will solve a couple of things we've been thinking about.

This will happen much later in the build, so you'll have to wait to see how it works out...

When you've finished it in a few weeks, I've got a 2a you can restore.

. Cam is working full time and keeps forgetting to post anything here, but he is helping when he can. I get itchy fingers when I get home from work, so I've been getting stuck in when I can too.

It's chassis cleaning time once I dig the engine crane out of the corner of the garage and lift the engine and box clear. That is something Cam will be doing on his own - it will be his first true test to see if he has what it takes to restore an old clunker.

Sorry I haven't posted anything in a while, just started full time work and haven't had the energy to do anything , so here's what we're up to at the moment.


Body stripped, now just have to get all the mechanical stuff out of the way.




Got the fuel tank out and noticed "Tamworth Carburetor Service" written on it, shows you how far it has travelled.


(By the way, the photos do have a filter on them, dad accidentally decided to turn hipster the other day)

I don't even know how to turn a filter on! Not my fault....

Was there this arvo so inspected it all. What an excellent base to start with, can't wait to see how it all comes together.

Just a quick update, I hope Cam doesn't mind.

The chassis is nearing completion as far as repairs, cleaning and paint goes. The only damage on the chassis was the rear LH outrigger part of the rear crossmember, which had been broken off at some stage and welded back on with cockey ****. The metal was all bent, so I cut and folded up a new outrigger and welded it back on properly. With just a smear of bog and some paint, it looks better than new. The whole rear crossmember was cleaned up of any bits not needed so it looks a bit less cluttered.

Also, the main crossmember under the back of the engine had hit a tree stump or rock at god knows what speed - enough to turn it almost inside out. That has been cut out, the chassis prepped and a new section welded in. Just got to finish that off and then the rest of the chassis can be cleaned and painted, the it's onto the suspension, axles and brakes.
