Heater Plugs (again)
just got a repro of the owners manual 71-78.
I have a 75 Diesel. The glow plugs do nothing but it starts well on a good battery.
Page 16 talks about the 4 positions of the key - but I only appear to have 3.
Off , electrics on , starter.
I appear to be missing heater plugs on which I guess should come after electrics on.
I thought I may have had a stand alone switch to operate the plugs somewhere on the dash - but all switches are present and correct.
There's mention in the manual in a previous paragraph that before you can operate the heater plugs you need to pull the stop cable right out - but I don't see how this can do anything other than stop the fuel from getting through.
Is my ignition barrel knackered or am I missing the point?
Any thoughts gratefully received.

I had a similar situation with my 72 SWB which had been converted from petrol to diesel and was still using the petrol ignition switch. The new diesel ignition switch has OFF - ACC - GLOW - START but to get it to glow you turn it from ACC and hold it before it engages the starter. How many contacts are on the back of the ignition switch?
It could be many things, does it still have the ballast resistor? and have you checked if there is any power getting to the glow plugs to start with, it could be a broken wire or loose connection.
Good luck and i hope i didn't confuse you

Hello Mate - no confusion - its all very helpful. Thanks.
The ballast resistor is in situ.
I'll have a look at the ignition barrel.
I do have a yellow brown wire flapping about behind the dash which could be part of the problem , but notwithstanding that there's no point on the ignition which rests at stage 3. So It just goes off/electrics on / crank. Which has thrown me. If it was a petrol ignition , wouldn't it still have 4 stages to it?
I've never been able to find any id near the spring hangers so I don't know if the engine is original to the cab.
I'll check the voltage.
I forgot to mention that the cold start light doesn't come on at any point until you stop the engine!
Thanks for replying.

Hello
I have a stock standard 1975 Land Rover Series 3 diesel and it has a glow position just before the starter kicks over.
It looks like you may have to go and visit some folks like this one and get a new diesel dedicated ignition switch and find an appropriate wire or two in your dash and engine bay.

Thanks for this - I re read Deano's message and re -read the handbook (always helps!) - I didn't understand the "continue to turn to the right against stop " part. So I thought it would just rest at a point while the plugs heated up and then you moved it to the next point to crank it - "further movement to the right against spring pressure" now makes a lot of sense.
So I moved the key slowly to the right and held it and hey presto , on comes the cold start light - I gave it 20 seconds and then moved the key hard against the spring and he fired up much better than previous. I'm guessing the plugs are all OK but need to make a long pair of wires + croc clips on the end for my multimeter so I can check the current from inside the cab!
Beautiful. I have a clip of him from last Summer on You Tube as "Fumbly Measles" if you like a bit of smoke.
Do your engines have two breathers by the way? I have one at the front coming off the "mushroom" and then one at the back which disappears off to nowhere via a bit of old hose and some copper pipe. I've never seen a picture of one with two hoses?
Thanks Guys.
