Hi, I bought a series 1969 2a 6 cyl van for parts 3 yrs ago, it had factory fitted twin 16 gallon pressed steel type tanks, (similar design to 10 gallon tank) and was fitted with a dual su type electric fuel pump setup. it had a DPDT switch on the dash which switched the front or rear half of the pump on and also switched between the sender units to the fuel gauge. The tanks were soldered onto a flatish steel plate which was the mounting to the front and rear outrigger mounts. they were bad for the tanks separating from the plate and rattling loose and filling up with crud between the two pieces and rusting out coz the pressed steel construction of them meant the steel was very thin. It had twin fillers as well. I actually have twin aftermarket 16 gallon tanks in my series 2a 1967 van now. thinking about fitting a wagon rear tank in as well giving me around 220 litres fuel for longer range. (I hope...lol)

    Cheers Rod

Incidently the 1969 van had the headlights mounted on the gaurds like "bug eyes" not like series 3

    Hi Rod

How do you know that the 16 gal tanks were factory fitted in 1969?

Just because it has a professional job some 45 years later doesn't mean it was like that originally. The LROC Sydney made a bulk purchase of 16 and 15 gal tanks from Leyland Australia in about 1975-76 and many of our members were fitting them the SII and SIIa as well as secondary tanks in SIII.

No I did not see every Land Rover that came off the production line from 1969, but have owned Land Rovers continuously since 1968.

The double ended SU pump were standard equipment on six cylinder Land Rovers. In a single tank system both ends were supplied from the same tank. It was modified to switch for two tanks, commonly it was a 10 or 16 gal rear and a 10 gal underseat tank on the drivers side, although the battery was sometimes re-positioned from the LHS seatbox and a second underseat tank.

If 16 gal tanks were options in SIIa, why was the Australian Army still purchasing SIIa in 1972 with twin 10 gal tanks.

The bug eye SIIa were unique to North America although it was a common after market mod in Oz.

Hi, the guy I bought it from was the original owner of the vehicle from new and told me that it was delivered to him that way as he had ordered it. his only modification was to have fitted a 250 ford 6 cyl motor to it in 1985 when the original 6 cyl "blew up". Battery was fitted in the same spot as 4 cyl in front rh side. Both tanks were rusted out from the outside in. The tanks were original land rover type 16 gallon as was told to me by Kym, late of landranger spares and Len from Lens land rovers. both businesses have closed now. Very hard to get series parts here in Adelaide now

    Cheers Rod.

Ps. The rover was delivered with headlights fitted as they were. something to do with vehicle design rules here in SA at the time as told to me by the original owner. the rover even had twin spare wheels mounted either side in the rear so could effectively carry 3 spares. even the rear door was different. it looked like the upper and lower tailgates had been joined in the middle and it had strange looking hinges fitted to it. it opened to the drivers side and was locked by one of the original tailgate latches only. guy still had original bill of sale, wouldn't give it to me tho
pity its gone now. chassis was rusted out and no one wanted the almost rust free 6cyl bulkhead when I advertised it here in adelaide

    Hi All

Here are some photos of the outriggers that it was fitted to .... Hmmm I initially thought the tank was standard and then I saw that it was supported by the bulkhead outrigger.

Both sides of the tank are rusted badly and needs to be replaced with a new standard one.

    Your thoughts ????

    Thanks

Any ideas on where and how I can fit an auxiliary fuel tank to my SWB? .. I am restoring it for long expedition trips and I would like to have more fuel available other than in jerry cans?

Rod, that is exactly what happened to my tank, all the crud caused the tank and outriggers to rust badly, hence the replacement......

What about fitting another 10 gallon tank on the left hand side. It can be filled from a new filler on the LH side - use the same filler cap and surround as found on the RH side. Connecting hoses seem to be unavailable but a RH hose can be cut in half and made to fit using hose clamps.

    20 gallons = approx. 90 litres.

Alternatively the 16 gallon tanks may fit a shorty,

    Cheers Charlie

The problem was always that the crud got caught in the brackets and some owners never bothered to wash it out.

It looks like that vehicle has spent a lot of time on beach sand or salt lakes.

The tank is an after market repacement, not original Land Rover.

I would be checking the rest of the chassis, you may be better off trying to find another rust free chassis (and ID/compliance plates) from West of the ranges. It may save you a lot of work in rust repair.

The SIII 16gal tanks were fitted in exactly that way and the 88" and 109" have the exact same dimensions in that area.

    Hi Rod

I hear what you're saying and no disrepect to you, but I will be waiting for other documentary sources before I change my opinion.

(A friend just bought a Perentie wagon from the person who bought it at Graysonline auction earlier in the year. This "original civilian" owner informed my friend he had only done about 2,000 km in the vehicle since buying it. We have the original sales information from Graysonline and the vehicle is about 14,000K older than it was at auction. It is my experience that vendors don't always tell the truth.)

    Hi

The rest of the chassis is good, lucky for me, with only a little rust where the front bumper bolts onto the chassis.

What do you mean by ID/compliance plates? it has the standard plates on the passenger footwell, and above the radiator?

It was licensed until about 4 years ago

    Thanks for your help
