    2.6 Engine replacement

Hi all. Looking for a replacement motor for my 6 cyl Series 3. Mechanic suggests a 186 red Holden, and that seems like a good idea. This is pretty much the last hurdle for the resurrection of the old thing, lousy compression on the engine so out it comes.
Ideally I'm looking for one in another Landrover which I can take out, and in a perfect world it would have the conversion kit on the back to marry to the gearbox.
Not asking much I know ! Would also grab a whole (cheap) car if it had one in it...
I am in SW Victoria so similar geography would be a bonus....
    Thanks, all !

Just he aware that Vicroads will require you to have an Engineers report for that conversion, which costs around $1,500. Make sure you factor that into your costs when working out what this will cost you.

Speak to an Engineer before you start - different Engineers like things done differently. I know one that will ask you to keep the factory engine mounts and and another who prefers to have the Holden mounts fitted. Each requires very different brackets to be fabricated.

Why isn't rebuilding the factory 6 an option, or finding one that runs to bolt straight in? The low compression will probably be burnt exhaust valves. Those that don't know these engines bag them out, but those that do know them, and have owned them, generally speak highly of them. Check out the thread running here '2.6 Engine Improvements' - it might give you some ideas.

All the best with which ever way you go. Finding a complete Holden engine, with an adaptor plate and mounts shouldn't be hard, they are out there. I swapped a running Holden engine with all the conversion bits recently for a slab of beer as I couldn't even get a nibble at $100. Don't pay a lot, they aren't all that scarce.

Hey thanks, that's useful information. I have found an engine and it is going into the car this week, so will see how it goes. Now have a couple of 6 cylinder Landrover ones...might be a slow-time project I think :-)
