    Stage 1 V8 Project & Questions

    Hi all,

I've recently started work on a 1981 Stage 1 V8. At this stage, I'm unsure of how much work/money I want to put into it so currently I'm just working towards getting it registered. This my first Land Rover I've owned myself and so far am enjoying it immensely. Seeing as this is the first time I've ever done anything like this, I will have a fair amount of questions for you guys as I go along. Due to work / study commitments however, I will have limited time to work on the car so won't be getting anywhere too quickly.

My first question already is in regards to the Reversing Lights switch on the transmission. From looking through various manuals and on here I'm a bit confused. The car is not running original box and engine: It has a 3.9L from a Range Rover as well as the transmission, which is an auto 4HP22.

A couple of the manuals I've looked at states that the starter inhibitor multi-plug is also for the reversing lights but I have these other switches on the box I would like to find out what they are for:

I'm pretty sure this switch circled in red is a for a temperature probe?

    Poor quality photo for location...

Switch itself on top of the transfer case, also have seen references that this may be for reversing lights, however I wouldn't imagine the lights being connected to the transfer case unless these boxes are only used in vehicles that are 4x4 constant?

Hope you fellas can help me out here. I did spend a fair amount of time searching trying to find the right information already posted elsewhere but had no luck.

The 4HP22 has the reverse and the inhibit in the one switch - not sure of the pin out at this time of night, I can check my Rangie tomorrow arvo if needed. As mentioned, the second switch you show on the TC is for the diff lock light.

Oh, and nice project - welcome to the forum.

Ah cheers fellas, that makes sense. Looks like I'll have to buy a new plug though cause if you can see from the photo - it's a wee bit melted from just hanging loose against the box!

Well I got a chance to do a little bit over the weekend however not much of a progress report...

Stripped out a lot of seemingly useless wires in the cab. Removal of wiring seemed to actually fix up some issues?? (Windscreen wipers now work after cutting a ground connection.)

Been wondering about the method of replacing this section of rust... It's the part that attaches to the chassis outrigger on the body of the vehicle.

I went to Jaycar to pick up a replacement plug to connect onto the inhibitor switch as mine has been melted and they don't have them. Looks like a fairly standard plug to me. Would any of you guys know where I could get a replacement from as an entire new switch is not desirable at ~$450. The section I need to replace is as in photo.
