Yes, you are on the right track, but it is so long since I did one I can't remember the details. However, I do remember that you also need to have the key in barrel to remove it. Which means that if you are changing the barrel because you have not got the key, you will have to drill it out. (I was changing barrel into a new lock as the old one was worn out.)

I think you are on the right trail by putting a pin in the hole , try depressing it and then turn the key halfway and pull the barrel assembly out with the key.

I'll have a look in the handbook to see if there 's a clue.

If you've lost the keys - don't worry. I got a set of burst proof locks from the wrecker sans keys. My dad just took them to the locksmiths and they made up keys for them easily and cheaply.

I have the keys - just want to swap the lock barrels into a different set of handle units to give the same key for the ignition.

I have been turning the lock with the key when I insert the pin and, as noted before, about half way into the turn there is a slot that the pin goes into. Just so far it hasn't released.

The official manual tells you how to pull the handle assembly off the door frame, but not how to release the barrel.

Will keep probing.

Just found an older post which suggested that the position of the catch and lever might have a bearing on releasing the barrel.

Had a fiddle this morning using an inverted pop rivet with the tip squared off.

After a bit jiggling the barrel came free - the good bit. The bad bit was that the small round plate pressed into the barrel shaft to secure the spring and brass securing pin came away as well. Effectively making it u/s.

Basically, it is a simple enough fitting as (apart from the jiggling) it is simply held in place by the sprung securing pin. In theory, depressing the pin with an appropriate probe when the key is about half way through its rotation should release it.

Emphasis there on "should", because the second barrel still wont release. However, given that the first one is effectively u/s now the point of the original exercise has diminished a bit.

Time to get a new pair of matched barrels....

Emphasis here is on "matched" - I have two new door handle and lock kits from the UK, but despite asking for a true pair they came with non-matching locks and keys. A bit like Punch and Judy, the next worst thing after one key is two keys. Three keys is even worse.....the ignition is different again.

Hence the attempt to swap the old barrels for the new ones.

Correct - my truck originally came to me without a door key (ignition is different) and I just took the whole unit off the door and to the local locksmith for new keys. Cost about $5 from memory.

Is it possible to reassemble the brass pin, spring & disc. I'm sure I did one years ago, very fiddly but once held in place I centre punched the barrel in a couple of spots to stop the disc coming back out.
