    Electronic Ignition

Hi, has anyone fitted electronic ignition on their 2.25 and if so was it worth it and do you have any recommendations?

    Thanks

    Sort of

    Hello from Brisbane.

I do have an electronic ignition kit including a dedicated distributor from the UK and a 2.25litre motor - but not together yet.

However, several people I know who also have the kits fitted are in no hurry to remove them either. Take that to mean they are pretty good.

I got mine from a well known UK specialist (rhymes with pieman) who sells a good product but is a bit like a dementia sufferer to deal with. Once past that hurdle it is pretty good sailing.

    Cheers,

    Jondavball,
I have fitted two units to two different 2.25's both with equal success.
One was a complete new electronic distributor, the other one was the module and rotor only.
They will improve starting, idle, pick up and will enable you to run better exhausts and higher compression if you want to.
Highly recommended but just make sure you specify which distributor the kit is for or replaces as there are differences.
Mine were both Powerspark from evilbay.

I'm running the power spark replacement dizzy too, it's excellent.
The car starts first time, every time.
They are an inherently reliable system, if you're really paranoid simply carry the stock dizzy in the car if you go bush.

As has been said the advantage with replacing the complete distributor other than it is new is that you end up with a complete spare dizzy that you can pack away in the vehicle, not that you will ever need it by all accounts.

    Go for a kit

    Hello again.

Various outlets will sell bits or full kits (distributor with module etc, high performance leads and coil). The full kit is usually the best deal because it should have been optimised for the motor plus everything is new. Just fitting the module doesn't seem to be as successful, especially without a coil upgrade.

    Typical example for Powerspark:

    http://www.simonbbc.com/bundle-deals...l-8mm-ht-leads

Need to check what distributor you actually have in your truck before ordering.

You also need to check what deals are going at any given time even from the same vendor - the issue I had with my UK supplier was over postage because two of the so-called half kits were listed cheaper for the parts than the full kit with exactly the same collection of bits, but the postage on the full kit was considerably lower than the combined postage. Suggestions to lump them together for the lower postage went nowhere so I bought them anyway.

Still got a good deal although the exchange rate was a lot more favourable then cf. now.

    Cheers,

Mine was fitted with a drop it unit. not found the internal module to find a brand but the pick up bolts to the points plate and the round bit[brain fade] drops over the cam lobe-so you retro it back to points.

the mechanic I purchased it from had exploded coils. it has a generic 7 volt red oil filled coil now.. he fitted a ballast resister and 7 volt coil and some crap bosch cheapo silicone leads.

it originally had no ballast and now has no bypass wire for starting but a future project is to explore if a high energy [holden VC-VK] or a GT40R or E etc is better suited.
    .
I purchased BKR6ES plugs last week and running great.
