I have 1 and a half sitting in my shed, your welcome to have.
As you've seen, they are around when you go looking.. Many people bag them out, but they are a smooth running engine that suits the Series perfectly. They rev much easier that a Holden 6 and with a bit of work make some good reliable power. See the thread on here in the Series 3 section - '2.6 Engine Improvements'
Probably won't be as cheap to rebuild as a Holden 6 but by the time you factor in engineering for the Holden engine, you will be miles in front using the Rover 6.

Mate 300 TDI engine out of a disco. Works beautifully lots of parts available.

Yes, the 300TDI is a good idea if you're going to go non standard - far better than a holden 6. The 200TDI goes in even easier, but is getting a bit thin on the ground. With any non standard conversion, just check the registration and engineering requirements of your state before spending your money.
And remember that any non standard conversion will cost orders of magnitude more than putting the standard engine back in. Not trying to put you off doing it, just be aware of all the facts before diving in headfirst.![]()
