should I expect the series 3 stage 1 Isuzu to move quickly in 1st high

Have also pasted this question in the Isuzu 4bd1 area as part of another discussion, and hoping for a wider audience by posting here.

I've been playing around with a series 3 stage 1 Isuzu non-turbo cab ute. Engine runs fine.

Yesterday I got the clutch plate to 'un-glue' itself from the flywheel without pulling the box back - lots of revving! So I can now engage gears with the engine running.

Took it for a run around the property, with only handbrake working.

Was surprised (unnervingly!?) at what speed the vehicle wants to move off in 1st or in reverse unless you slip the clutch to reduce the power supply (as compared to my Toyota 6 cylinder diesel Troopy for example). Seems to have implications as to how easily it will be driven in high first in more difficult situations without always slipping the clutch or resorting to low range.

At near idle in high 1st I was expecting such a high capacity engine to move forward at a lazy walking speed, and to have to kick the engine to move a bit faster in first.

This is my first experience with a 4bd1 running and in gear.

The engine does not sound as if it is fast idling, but does sound like it will stall if I don't let it have its head.

Is it possible someone has changed a ratio somewhere or is this enthusiasm to move off usual? It has no load in the tray (well the tray is actually missing so its just the frame). The original LT95 4 speed I believe (integrated transfer case). Salisbury diff as expected. Yet to try low range 1st.

Sorry mate, I've got to laugh - someone worried by how fast his Landy is

You can also assume I don't have an answer. Interesting problem though, I know what you're getting at.

Yes, I wondered how much time I should invest in the thread title compared to just explaining in the body text.

It was 'bl**dy hell' moment when I let the clutch out - maybe something just to get used to - along with glass pains that jump in their frames, steering wheel that wants to share your stomach cavity etc.

I assume that the S3, like the 110, when fitted with the Isuzu, has the highest available high range ratio (0.996 from memory) to allow a reasonable top speed with the relatively slow revving engine. This means that first is rather high compared to other vehicles.

Low range is low compared to, for example, the Toyo, so that a very low first gear is not necessary. You probably use low range more often in an Isuzu engined Landrover than similar vehicles, but this is compensated for by the relatively close four ratios.

I've turboed my 110 4BD1 which makes a difference. However, on flat ground mine will move on idle without any application of the accelerator. It moves at a fast walking pace at idle. It has a .996 LT95.

the Stage 1 Isuzu had either the 0.996:1 transfer or the 1.17:1 transfer.

Your's sounds like the 0.996:1 ratio.

The reason is that the 4BD1 is a low revving engine and with the 1.17:1 runs out of revs at highway speeds.

It seems even worse in reverse. Its the same as the perentie, and when I have to back a trailer into a tight spot with the perentie I usually select low range.

Thanks everyone. Maybe it is just down to the 0.996:1. Lotz-A-Landies low range in reverse is the impression I get with this vehicle.

Now, see my thread on plastic bucket seats...

Anyone converted a single cab to an xtracab so you can get the seat further back. Plastic seats instead of foam will give me a couple of inches, which seems far more comfortable.

I know of people who have cut down a 88/109 hard top roof, but the square corners look odd with the curved corners of the truck rear window panel.

There was a member here who was going to get a fibreglass "bubble top" roof panel moulded for a Series extra cab project, but I don't think its progressed (apart from the 100mm longer doors.)

Its a 110 I streched into a 120 and made this xtracab back in the early 80,s before it was fashionable but the principle is the same.
It was a ute so was relatively easy. Cut the roof in half and let in the centre from another . Joined with Araldite and pop rivets.
I think they are Holden seats but heaps of leg room now.
Full width sliding drawer is handy too.
It looks a bit tatty now but it still works

Thanks 123rover50, looks good. I guess this is what Lotza was referring to. I see the square corners as maybe a good place to mount aerials(?)
