Stupid Key Question - Can you get ignition keys to match door keys?

    Hi All,

New SIII owner and I am working through building up a large parts list.

My SWB currently has three different keys (ignition, drivers door and rear door), but I only have two of them... Means I cannot lock the rear door (not ideal given I live in the city).

My question is, can I get matching barrels for ignition and door locks? Can the barrel's available for sale from the usual suspect be utilised in the ignition?

    Sorry for the stupid question!

    Tom

No stupid questions Tom, just ones you don't know the answers to yet.

You can get a set of barrels to suit the door locks and rear door that are all keyed the same - the ignition key is a different style (of mine anyway)

Rover parts have a set - as would other LR specialist parts suppliers - Land Rover Parts - 3 BARRELS AND KEY SET ANTI BURST DOOR LOCKS SERIES 3 AND 101 F/C + 110/90 COUNTY (inc. ex-army 110) LIFT UP HANDLES (30mm L)

if you have a number on the lock barrel, you can get a key cut for it.
drivers door and ign should be the same key

You need a key to turn the lock to a position where the barrel can be released (there is a small pin that needs to be pressed to release it, see link below). I've managed to drill a hole to get to the pin when I haven't had the key in similar locks.
With the barrel out a key could be cut to match the lock (as long as the key blank is available).

    Relatively easy

    Hello from Brisbane.

A couple of points - you can get matched barrel sets for the doors and ignitions if the keys have been lost, the locks don't work or have been sourced from several different vehicles. Any of these is common for vehicles of this age.

You can remove the barrels from the locks as described, but run a better than average chance of destroying one or more in the process. I did........

Most locksmiths can cut the right key if they have the barrel to work with (even without numbers). The easier option is probably to unbolt the whole door lock and handle assembly or whatever from the vehicle and taking it to the locksmith complete. The correct Union keys will cost somewhere around $5-$12 depending on who you are dealing with.

    Cheers,

Thanks all, will try and get the rear door barrel out without drilling to see if I cannot just order a spare key!

Unfortunately my locks must have been changed at some stage given they don't match!

Not the end of the world.

Unless I am mistaken, the ignition lock barrel on Series 3 fitted with a steering lock is not interchangeable with door lock barrels.

The door (including rear door) locks are easily removed, and a fallback position would be to take the locks to a lockmaker. Or just your rear door lock and the door key.

As a comment - I think I have yet to see a Series Landrover with only one key, except for those with no door locks. (And I have been looking at Series Landrovers for well over fifty years.)

I had only the ignition key when I bought the S3 109. I had to replace the drivers side door lock so now I have two keys. The passenger door has no key so I just lock it from the inside. Its a cab so I dont have to worry about anything else. I painted the ignition key red and the door key green as they were similar and it just made it easier as the fob has the front door key , shed key, padlock for the fuel filler etc.
    cheers,

I must be lucky then. My SIIa came with an original matching number ignition key that operates the door lock. It is well worn, but still works.

Was it a station wagon? Few other 2as had door locks from the factory, most being fitted by owners or dealers.
