sounds like your hip popping into place

So im stumped (which is not hard)
as I turn left there is a 'thok' like when your hip pops, its a low deep noise and sounds like it is coming from the passenger side footwell.
I have riased the front and turned the wheels by hand, checked for wheel bearing slop, turned it by the wheel in the cab. Nothing, there's nothing that looks out of place, all the suspension bushes and leaf spring bolts where replaced when I went for rego and they are all tight.
I am thinking that I might put my gopro in the wheel well and video it to see if anything is moving under pressure (hence when lifted there is no noise).

    Anyone had a similar gremlin?

    Cheers

Hmm, does it do it on any amount of lock? Going any speed? Have you had a passenger in to help locate it? Noises are funny as the sound can travel and seem to be where they are not. Initial thoughts are , shockie, tire tread catching on spring or chassis, Uni joint in the swivel housing. Is FWH's fitted? that side may be partly engaged. Or if standard hubs fitted, it may be a bit worn. My first thoughts were the spring shifting but you say the U bolts are all good.

I've got the same problem. The rear spring eye of one front spring doesn't clamp the spring bush hard enough. As I go around a corner the spring moves about 1/8"along the bush till it hits the shackle, thock.

I had the same prob on my s2a, it was the 2nd front leaf on the spring pack hitting the chassis hanger at times. I only found it when i stripped the 2a down for rebuild. see pic attatched...

    Cheers Rod.

Oops thats the rear one but the front was the same wear marking as the rear.

Im under the impression that it is the leaf spring moving on the eyelet bush, even though it was replaced fairly recently it is faily worn (the rubber component) compared to the driver side. I'll stick a camera up into the undercarriage and give it a look see.
It it progressively getting to be every time I turn in one direction regardless of speed, or anything.
Im just hoping that it is an easy fix as I am scheduled to drive it to Robe SA for a family fourby beach run and wanted it to be the old trooper showing the new cars where they came from.
    thanks for your input fellas

The spring bushes should show no signs of wear at all. The outer steel tube should be a press fit in the spring eye, and the inner steel tube should be clamped between the two shackle plates, and all movement taken up by flexing of the rubber. If the inner tube can move on shackle bolt, it will wear rapidly, and can result in this sort of noise.

The rubber bush needs to be not under torques stress in the resting position, which means when assembling after replacing the bush, make sure that the shackle bolts are not tightened until the vehicle's weight is on the springs, and preferably take it for a very short drive before tightening, or at least give it a good rock. Failure to do this will result in early failure of the rubber.

Other things to look for - dry (due to damaged boot) on any of the six tie rod ends. Steering arm loose on steering box or top or bottom of the relay or either swivel housing. All of these are things that should be fixed ASAP.

Lack of swivel preload, and/or notches worn in bottom swivel bearing.

Broken spring leaf. Steps worn in the spring leaves at the end of the shorter leaves (unlikely to cause this noise).

Just had the same problem, bush moving in spring eye.
Quick fix is to fit a polyurethane bush, they have a flange that will stop the movement.

The spring eye on the passenger side is sitting off to one side compared to the driver side spring which is pretty much dead center.
I'll take the floor plate off and drive around the back paddock tomorrow morning to see if it is that.
The inner metal part of the bush is intact and clamped it's just the rubber outside of it is deformed and deteriorating. Im assuming that it was put in (under mechanics time frames) and wasn't settled in as you stated.
it drove beautifully when it came back from having it done compared to when I first picked it up. ive been through some horrendous mud holes in the wombat forest so I don't think that it would have helped once it got in there and sandpaper'd it up.

If the spring bush rubber has failed, allowing the spring to move from side to side with steering loads, this could well cause this effect, especially if you are talking about the front spring.

So here is the offending eye shackle bush from the passenger side.
I replaced both sides with nolathene ones and torqued up after putting it back on to its road stance with a little drive down the road while it was snicked up but not to tight to settle it in.

    thanks fot your assistance guys.
