    Fuel Line or Pipe Replacement

    Evening all,

My little SWB has been going very well and I have been very pleased with her. I have noticed though, if she sits for a few days then I have to prime the fuel pump as it is losing pressure in the line.

I can see some cracking in the fuel line which runs from the tank to the fuel pump and assume that this is allowing enough air ingress that it is losing syphon over a few days...

I have searched the forum with out any luck, so my next dumb question is what is my best bet for replacing the fuel line (or pipe as the poms seem to call it)?

The parts manual seems to call it 552435 (have a 73 SW, but when I search for the part none of the usual suspects have that part in stock except Craddocks which want my first born child (well GBP65 + postage).

Am I missing something? Has the part be superseded?

Can I just use the existing fittings and buy some fuel line from super cheap?

Thanks again for all the help - the forum is an invaluable for mechanical moron such as myself!

yep, but one of the better things to use is the nylon style high pressure or hydraulic plastic spill off line in the right Internal diameter.

to make up your lines just cut the metal pipe clean up the ends, and then heat the line in hot water and push it on. Lay it out straight and leave it in the sun with a little tension on it and it'll warm up and form straight, fit it to the vehicle secure the line where you want it and then warm it up with a hair drier so it'll take the shape you want.

Well this Pom calls it fuel line... As does ever other one I know.

    Must be an age thing.

Rigid I'd call pipe and flexible I'd call hose (maybe line), and yes I'm a Pom.

Not sure of the size of the original pipe but you could make one using brake pipe. You may have to solder on fittings or use short a section of hose at each end.

I had a similar problem and it was the short flexible section down by the chassis that connects the rigid pipe to the pump. Replaced this and problem went away.

    Thanks

Thanks all - the existing is all ready rubber line so I assume the original "Pipe" has been replaced.

I will have to pull the existing out and go for a run to supercheap to find the best fit for diameter. I will let you know how it goes.

For the record I don't use the term "Pom" with any ill will! Well maybe with the exception of during the Ashes...

its 3/8th if its the normal size replacement.

8mm is the typical metric equivelent dont forget hose clamps.

Cheers Dave - thanks for the fuel line dimensions, it saves me having to have two cracks at the task!

Guessing I have to drop the fuel tank out to get to the other end... Bugger!

Awesome when someone has already asked the question and been given the answer that I needed. Can I simply make the gaskets that sit on the tank around the fittings? if so what is the best material ?

    Love a good forum search!

I made my own gaskets with some off the shelf gasket paper from Sprint Auto. I coated both sides of the paper with Loctite Aviation Gasket Sealant.
