I know of mechanics who have made a pointer out of a timing case bolt by adding bits to it and cutting a notch in the crank pulley, but I always thought that the timing mark is accessible through a window on the RHS of the flywheel housing.
Is this the timing mark ? - seems odd to me that its not on the front? The blob of white paint is my attempt to mark it so that I can see it.
cheers,

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
The Series III repair operation manual shows a pressed metal pointer bolted to the timing cover and the timing mark at the rear of the pulley like yours.
I don't have a Series III motor handy to double check.
The timing 'mark' on yours is a serious cut into the pulley though....

Hi Dark,
Lotz a Landies said,
but I always thought that the timing mark is accessible through a window on the RHS of the flywheel housing.
That was not the case on my 902xxxxx motor, but on my earlier 251xxxxx engine, It has the plate and Timing pointer, on the rear housing, as mentioned.
Hope this helps.

correct thats the timing mark for a 2.25. when you have the oem pointer it sits under 2 bolts on the timing chain cover which has (from memory) 1 large pointer and is bracketed by smaller ones its on the back of the pully because the mark is closer to the pointers so alignment errors are reduced.
Earlier engines can have both the notch on the pully and the marks on the flywheel.

G'day All
Good comments. The 2a petrol engine with the flywheel timing marks was a better idea because it has the EP mark as well. The exhaust peak mark is critical to get the valve timing correct. When I next have the flywheel off I will add some additional marks for ignition timing advance and EP to continue engine tuning.
