I'm not much help on fixing your problem but I can tell you it's called a Stage 1 - basically it's a V8 Series 3 but with constant 4WD. It is the precursor to what became the Defender.

Yeah thanks Aaron that's pretty much what I have done. I'm hoping that if I cut the bush out and start again I will have more luck. I have several unf bolts, silkolene copper lube on the threads and I found a socket that is just a fraction smaller than the bush so it pushes perfectly on the outer.
The next job is going to be the leaf spring bushes, any tricks I need to know?

The bushes in the springs are easier because the spring eye is springy. Driving a cold chisel slightly into the space between the eye and the top of the main leaf will help, but should not be necessary.

I did a set once.
drilled the rubber out got a large bolt that fitted into the remaining bush and welded its head to the bush material.Cooled it off with water and it belted out easy peasy.
