    2 speed wipers

    Hello from Brisbane.

    A quick one.

Were 2 speed screen wipers ever mandated as compulsory fitment in Series 3 Land Rovers?

If "yes" - does anyone know the year that this came in?

I believe the UK part number for the switch is 575146.

    Cheers,

    Neil

My 1981 Series 3 did have two speed. And it was certainly not optioned, as the vehicle was never registered, so it would not have been fitted unless they all had it - and I don't think they would have been fitted unless mandated in at least one Australian state (probably in an ADR, I'd guess).

    Thanks

    Hello again from Brisbane.

As part of a long running refurbishment of my 1975 88" I picked up a new 2 speed wiper motor to replace the original single speed motor.

Installation will, I guess, require a switch that accommodates both wiper speeds but also still power the automatic re-positioning when turned off. Plus wiring etc.

New NOS rotary switches (575146) are either unobtainable in the UK or come at a fairly unattractive price (GBP50+) - so I figured it would be back to the wrecks. Just needed to know how far back I could go and still find a 2 speed switch.

I have a 3 position (off-low-high) Lucas toggle switch that has the cut out etc but would prefer the rotary switch if I can get one at an agreeable price.

    Cheers,

    Neil

    Neil,

IIRC, the self park feature is a part of the wiper motor itself and not the switch. Power is supplied (via a fuse) to the motor and the control switches the earths on the 2 fields in the motor. The self park is an earth provided internally.

You know I went looking for those things and couldn't find them.... ended up using a Puma stalk and "customising" the steering column to fit.

I was having issues with my rotary switch in that however hard I tightened up the nut the whole switch just spun around when I turned it. I substituted it for an old toggle switch - I think it was a headlamp switch and got the wipers to run at two speeds. As far as I know I have a single speed motor. Sadly I cant remember how I wired it up. In the end , I just put a star washer behind the rotary switch and all is well. I keep meaning to revisit the idea though as it intrigued me.
    Maybe its worth a fiddle?
    cheers,
