    U.F.O

On the 75 Diesel , this is on the end of the oil filter. I cant see anything like it in the Haynes - or the Workshop or Parts manuals. All the wires seem to be disappearing off towards the dash. The only bit that rings a bell is the r/h terminal that's sadly obscured in the photo - this appears to have the usual oil pressure sender. I dont understand what the l/h or centre terminals are doing. Any ideas gratefully appreciated as usual.
    cheers,
    D

I have the same setup took me ages to work it all out. The right hand smaller part is the standard oil pressure switch which operates the low oil pressure dash light. the middle bit is an oil pressure sender for the oil pressure gauge. The bit on the left with 2 wires is another oil pressure switch. This is part of the reverse lights circuit!!

I believe it's part of the Australian design rules that the reverse lights can only operate when the engine is running. When there is no oil pressure (engine stopped) the switch opens and the circuit is broken. From the switch one of the wires go to reverse gear switch ontop of the gearbox.

God knows why this is an ADR and is only found on the later SIII'S mines a 1983. I plan to bypass mine as I find it quite useful to put it in reverse with the engine off and use the lights to see. Like shutting a gate.

    Hope this helps

that's beautiful Mate, thanks for that. I don't have any of the lamps on it at the moment and even if I did I doubt I would ever have worked out the reverse lights bit. What a wonderful bit of electrickery that is. I'd forgotten about the oil pressure gauge!

Also found on the Isuzu engined 110. I think it is only required for vehicles that have no accessories position on the switch, and is intended to stop the problems that may arise if a reverse light gives an incorrect indication you are about to reverse. Consider, for example, a car in a shopping centre carpark. The reverse light comes on, so oncoming traffic stops and waits for the car to back out. If the driver is just listening to the radio, it could be a long wait!
