You should be able to get at both fillers easily if you remove the passenger side floor. I can send you a pic if you need one.

I recently bought a 1977 series 3 SWB with 4 cyclinder engine. There is a loud whine or rubbing noise when driving ? sounds like a dry bearing. It is intermittent and goes away when 4WD is selected. We noticed that when it occurs, the shaft can be seen turning through the slit in the floor for the high-low lever. Each time the whine starts, the shaft starts to turn. I would appreciate any help in diagnosing the problem. It seems like it is trying to engage 4WD. It may be low on oil in the box. I topped up everything else, but couldn't get any into either the gearbox or the transfer box ? I can't remember which. I will get a pump and fill it tomorrow. It was suggested I remove the box and dismantle it, but before doing that I would like to know if there is anything I may be able to do to remedy it.

Unless you have free wheeling hubs, the front shaft should be turning all the time. If it is turning intermittently, and you do have free wheel hubs, then one of them is seizing intermittently, and the noise may be that or the front diff (any oil in it?) or the greaseless U-joint on the shaft. In other words the problem is probably in the front drive train.
If you do decide you need to check on the internals of the transfer case, then you can remove the bottom plate in situ. This gives access to everything except the shift selectors. If these need examining, the front extension housing can be removed in situ.

Check the handbrake mechanism is full and free when released and not full of crud. Makes a delightful rubbing noise.
I top up my gearbox using a piece of plastic tube and a funnel. Fit the tube to the funnel, drop it down through the access hatch under the centre seat, and push it into the gearbox filler hole. Pour the oil into the funnel until you see it flow back out of the hole.

After filing my gearbox last week, using a funnel and tube, I went and bought one of these from my local auto shop.
Thought it would be useful when filling the diffs.

I agree with the little hand pump bottle. The kids had one for their ricepower machines transmission. Much less mess.
Yeah, I got one of those too. I use the funnel method for top-ups when out in the field. I carry the funnel and tube in a clean sealable bag. Much easier to carry and useful for small top-up volumes. The pump is saved for major servicing.
