Series III LWB Station Wagon questions

Didn't get much time on it today, had to do a few chores round the place to make up for the arrival of 'yet another' Land Rover.

Bulkhead has no rot, just some surface rust.

Rear bench seat is in good shape but the front DeLuxe seats aren't in very good condition. Interesting that the bases are made from moulded chipboard, must have been expensive to make the moulds for producing them ?

The kids played in it for hours today. I gave them a dustpan & brush and some cleaning materials and left them to it.....

I did notice that the rear passenger doors had holes for the Series III window locks but the trim covered these and there are Series II type window locks at the top.

Definitely sounds like a transition vehicle......use up everything that's left from the last model first.

Sounds like it may well be an interim heater fitted to early S3s. Where does it draw air?

That does look like it had to be designed for the vehicle, which almost certainly means it was an early Series 3 factory heater. I can't find it in any of the Series 3 parts books I have however, but that does not mean it did not come from the factory!

One of the reasons for buying this Station Wagon was to score some better B posts and also replace the steel section behind the front of the rear wheelarch. Turns out this is a complete panel from the bottom of the A post, across to and including the B post and then across to and including the C post.
Found this article which includes details of this panel and the Defender part number that can be used as a replacement Land Rover Series 109 Rebuild - Rusty Land Rovers

Looked at the panel prices in the UK and it gets a bit expensive when you have to add freight.

So far I haven't found any serious rot in the chassis, bulkhead etc. so hopefully the panels I need to remove are OK. Bonus is the seatbelt mounts will help me get towards being able to fit belts into the Dormobile.

Noticed today that the door locks aren't anti-burst, didn't they come in with the Series III.

Holden motor mounts are bolted through the chassis rails.

The original Land Rover mount has been left in position.

Bulkhead is free of any serious rot but the panels I'm after do have some serious rust & holes !!

No, they were optional on Series 3. Optional as in at the distributor or dealer order, and were only fitted to Series 3 when mandated by the local authorities. In the case of Australia I think this would have been in 1973, but a study of the ADRs would confirm this.

Since this is clearly a very early Series 3, I would not expect to see anti-burst locks fitted. But, of course, they can be fitted later, although there is the hole for the key in the door skin with the antiburst lock.

Colin it is interesting that the engine mounts for the conversion are bolted through the chassis. I wonder if it was a home made conversion. Normally there were either cast or fabricated engine mounts as part of the conversion kits at the time. I have a set of mounts here that came out of a 109 six cylinder that was converted to a Holden six. They are made of cast iron, and about 250mm long, to reach from the standard chassis mounting point back to the mounting holes on the engine.
What adaptor plate does it have Colin, cast iron or alloy?
Any pics?
Sadly most likely it was once somebody's pride and joy, and but now it is a dismantled wreck!

It's been partly dismantled for years.
The person I got it from only wanted the gearbox, overdrive & front doors, he got it in kit form. Most of the nuts, bolts, brackets etc. are missing, speedo has been stripped down.......

Next weekend I'll get some pictures of the engine mounts. I also noticed the chassis has been plated under the back of the front springs. When the springs sag the chassis normally gets dented here so whether this was because the chassis got dented or a preventative measure.

Chassis is remarkably rust free. It has a fuel tank under the drivers seat and the outriggers either side seem rusty but that's about it. The reinforcing plate under the front tank has rusted & swollen so the tank is probably scrap.

Just went out in the drizzle and took a couple of photos. Brackets are fabricated.

Cheaper in the UK (without the glass) but would be expensive by the time it got here Series 3 Second Row Door Unglazed - RH - Paddock Spares
Glazed available also SECOND ROW DOOR SERIES 2 3 STATION WAGON 109 RH GLAZED

I think I'll keep these ones and repair the small amount of rust. I can then look for another LWB wagon knowing that I already have some good rear doors......
For some reason my wife doesn't understand my way of thinking.....
