Newbie advice - Wheels / Tyres / Carburetor / Airfilter

    Hello everyone

Have just purchased with a friend a 1973 88 Utilty, looking for some initial advice:

Have attached a couple of pictures.

    1) Wheels are 15 inch sunraisers tyres are trash..........what would be an economical replacement wheelset, was thinking standard military 7.5x16?

    2) Carburetor / fuel mix is a problem, runs rough black smoke (not blue/grey), the air filter looks like an old holden type - would this be fitted to a stromberg carb - should we replace?

    3) Currently set up as a soft top but missing rear hoops and canvas......any general advice on this? Sounds expensive to replace hoops and canvas

Any other general advice on getting started, we're just planning a simple safety renovation and to get on the road to have fun

    Thanks

    Richard

    Hi,
you can get a bikini canvas that fits over the cab section, it would be prime for your location. Exmoor make them and they fit well, no need for further hoops in the back.
Mil spec rims will give you that little bit more ground clearance but are thinner so if you are going over sand you may want to stick with wider rims.
carby? What engine are you running? Looks like a holden intake manifold so a new/ rebuilt stromberg are easy to find and easy to rebuild yourself.
Hope you get it on the road soon, they are a lot of fun.

    Thanks Lee apprecited the help

Had a better look now that we have got her home and indoors, the Carburetor is actually a Zenith, the previous owner had put a 'kit' through it but hadn't got it running very well, the mixture seems very rich, the airfilter is pretty ratty and looks like an old holden one and is just shoved on top and quite loose.

What would be the best way to go for a decent Air Filter - go the original oil bath or put something modern in?

We were also considering putting in a Weber replacement.

We had some advice about putting on 16inch sunraiser, budget is a big issue as we just want to get her safely on the road for now, the metallic green respray is staying as its been done very well (body off).

    Cheers

    SLOW

    Richard,

Hello from Bulawayo - but more usually Brisbane.

    Welcome to Series ownership.

Never one to let an opportunity go begging. You may find joining SLOW (Series Landy Owners) a worthwhile proposition for meeting like minded folks with a weakness for leaf sprung Land Rovers - the best kind. There is a section towards the end of the AULRO site that gives the relevant details.

Most of the club membership is centred in SEQ but we do draw in folks from all over this wide brown land.

    Cheers,

    Neil

    Hi Richard,

The Zenith can have some problems in a few areas, there is an o-ring in the centre that can get been pinched or damaged, the top can get warped and need to be sanded flat, the needle and seat may not be sealing properly and the floats can be adjusted incorrectly or even be damaged and not working correctly. All of these faults tend to cause flooding and running rich. Other problems can be caused if it wasn't cleaned properly when rebuilt and a jet is blocked.

Actually another thing I had problems with with the Zenith was that I bought a kit from Repco and the gasket between the body and the top plate was incorrect and it caused flooding when the drivers side was downhill.

    Hope that helps a little

Hi Tim thank you for the advice on the Zenith, we've been wondering whether to try and get it going or replace with a new unit, it starts first click, no throttle from cold, choke out, then idles very badly almost stalling but keeps idling, there is a ton of black smoke during idle.

Previous owner had his own commercial car workshop and said that they (workshop) had put a kit into it and changed plugs and points.

Is it also possible / likely that ignition timing is out as well?

Think we'll take Zenith off, check seals and blockages and try to 'Lap' the top and bottom casting halves as this seems to be common way to go.

    Really appreciate the help.

    Cheers

    Zenith Carburetor Rebuild

    Hi Tim and everyone

Big thanks for the help, we took a deep breath and opened up the Zenith Carb

There was what looked to be a fresh needle and gasket kit but probably not a full kit.

Following Tim's advice and this amazing article from Land Rover Monthly
link *found not by me but my co-owner

HOW TO REBUILD A CARBURETTOR - ZENITH 36IV | Land Rover Monthly

We straightened the double float and measured it and set to 33mm, took out and cleaned all of the needles and jets, cleaned it all thoroughly with carburetor cleaner.

Also checked and cleaned the discharge ball thingy

Finally we sanded down on a granit surface the top and bottom and emulsion tube halves which were very warped.

Put it back together and what do you know........no more black smoke.

Still idles quite burbley and hesitates but at least it moves in and out the garage without poisoning me.

Now in search of a replacement Air Cleaner and a wheel set.

    Thanks folks

hesitation can either be the accelator pump setup or the timing.

That's good to hear. It would probably now be worth checking the timing and adjusting the idle mixture and speed. The manual has the procedure for this pretty well described.
