Hi Tim, i was just re reading ur first post and noted the story behind ur getting the shorty. Mine is a similar story in that my father gave me my 109 s2a Betsy. He passed away a year later at 82. Im rebuilding my Betsy for that reason which i believe is similar to urs. I can only wish u good luck and keep on plugging away at it. These reasons for the rebuilds like ours are what gives me more motivation to get back into my rebuild. I really need as much motivating as i can get. This is why ive re read ur first post. It is an inspiration for me and i really need it atm. Thanks for sharing ur rebuild with us all.

Good to hear you have a similar story behind your 109. I'm certainly doing what I'm doing for sentimental reasons, not financial! (I'm way to scared to add up the invoices) Motivation is a sticking point for me too, and as I've mentioned before, this thread, and the responses from the members here helps immensely.

Hi Charlie,

Paint supplier was Steve at Variety Paints in Wangara varietypaints.com.au

Paint code is BS-4800-16C33.

The paint supplier, (Steve), didn't have to code on file anywhere, (probably because it's an engine colour, not a body colour), but has since made a note of it in case anyone else wants it. I'd found the code online somewhere, and it looks correct.

The paint was mixed in "Industrial Enamel" so it's suitable to use on an engine block. I took it in "paint in a tin" form, but Steve did ask if I wanted it in aerosol, which would be handy if you didn't have a gun.

So, with the engine off at the machine shop, the gearbox waiting for a layshaft, and the firewall getting blasted... the jobs I have been avoiding are starting to beckon, namely the bodywork :/

The tailgate needs a bit of work, there is a hole that needs to be repaired, and some dents in the central stiffener which I'm not too sure how to approach, the dents are deep enough to put a curve in the panel.

Options are:

Leave it
Drill small holes through the skin behind it so I can punch the worst of the dents out
Prise the stiffener off and replace it, but then how do I reattach it?

And finally, another question for the community, would you bother getting this flywheel skimmed? There are no ridges etc, and you can run a fingernail across it without any hindrance

I wouldnt bother with the flywheel. Just give it a rough sand over with some 80 grit just to scuff it up a bit.

The dents in the tailgte stiffener are almost standard - from dropping the tailgate onto the towing ball! Let us know if you figure out what to do!

You can drill the spot welds and remove the stiffener and then do one of the following:
1. Make a new one and glue it on with Sikaflex adhesive. The spot-weld depressions can be faked with a small end-mill in a drill press.

2. Or find someone with a decent spot-welder and use a shim of stainless steel on each side of the area to be welded.

Given that you have what looks like a corroded hole; is it worthwhile making a new tailgate?

Is it a reflection or is there some chatter marks on the bottom of the flywheel photograph? Have you checked it with a straight-edge and 0.001" feeler gauge? It would be shame to reassemble it and then have clutch judder problems; it is probably worth getting a quote to see what re-facing costs,

I have just finished reading through your thread, a little bit each day before work, and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. May I ask what your back ground is, as you have a great set of skills and I am both intrigued and impressed? Your attention to detail and ability to be able to pull down the complete vehicle with confidence and knowledge in so many areas is a great inspiration to myself and many others reading this thread. I look forward to watching you complete your project and hopefully seeing your Series III in the flesh one day as I too live in Perth and own a Series III.

One question for you though; what brand of parabolics did you fit? I am interested in how your parabolics perform as I have often thought of going down that route with mine. At the moment mine is still on the original springs but it is time to either reset them or maybe upgrade to parabolics.

Great work so far and keep inspiring us all out there in AULRO Land!!
