My 88" Series 3

I'm thinking about leaving the galv parts of the doors/tops unpainted. Partly because I like how they look, and partly to paint them they will need to be sanded flat, which kind of defeats the purpose of having them galv.

Any thoughts would be appreciated :)

Hi Tim, were abouts did you get the gal door tops and bottom frames from, i was thinking of getting rocky mountain alloy tops but these look the goods and may be cheaper.

Personal opinion only, but given the trouble that you have gone to with everything else I would be inclined to paint the outer side of the upper frames at least. The galvanised outer frame is fine on Series 1 trucks which is the way they left the factory. The rest didn't.

Otherwise, be prepared for the continual "how come you didn't ....." question.

Counter to what I said above, I wouldn't paint the bottom door frames - would look better with the galvanised finish. Plus they aren't going to be so obvious to the non-purists.

Tim, given this a lot of thought. 20 min . Looked at some 88 pictures and my thought is paint same at the roof and rear sides. Would kind of finish the line. But your call the adoring public won't mind .

Thanks for the comments Neil and Garry, current plan is to paint the aluminium skin on the door bottoms and tops in the body colour. I'm going to leave the galv'd steel frames unpainted for the moment, and as the painter put it, "it is easier to put paint on later, than to take it off, if you don't like it".

Garry, I've been wondering about the door tops also, but (nearly) every picture I've seen the door top is body colour, not roof colour... Happy to be corrected. :)

Colour of panels is usually up to personal choice. However, if you want to adhere to 'convention' the upper door panels on a Series 3 truck cab are usually painted in the same colour as the back panel which may or may not be the same as the roof panel. In the majority of cases this is also the same colour as the rest of the body. The upper door, back and roof panels on the earlier Series truck cabs were typically all the same colour which was usually the same as the body (e.g. bronze, grey or limestone).

my SIIA 88" ute has body coloured door tops and roof back panel. I've not seen one any different to this. I'm also about to redo my doors and decided to galvanise the frames (after I repair the rust). I'll be leaving them unpainted but mine isn't intended to be a restoration, rather a renovation, so I have S3 hinges and defender style mirrors to go on as well (cue gnashing of teeth by rivet counters) :)

Hi Nav, they are from SP Landrovers in the UK. SP landrovers LTD - Body panel Specialists

Looks like, (from their part numbers), they source them from AJC, (Arthur John Charles), whom seem to be well regarded for quality, however AJC will not ship internationally themselves.

I didn't examine them too closely before handing them over to the painter, but they looked very well made.
