Series sliding door window rubber fitment

What is the best method to fit the vertical rubber strip that seals both sliding panes? The old one came off easily but that can't be said about the new one!

I think most people leave them off...

Mine don't have them, so looking at the pic, is it a rubber U shaped channel that has a metal edge over it? If so, back from my glazing days, I'd say soapy water sprayed on, fit the rubber to the window, then lay the metal strip on, and belt it home with a rubber mallet. Have the glass sitting on its side on a bench. Glass will take a great deal of stress from the end, so you can use quite a bit of force on it if needed, much more than a gentle tap.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

I've always fitted them and have some more to do at the moment. More important if the vehicle stands outside because without it fitted a lot of water can find it's way in.

As Homestar said, soapy water is the go.... Fit rubber in channel, soapy water in rubber and on edge of glass put channel & rubber in position (glass vertical on a timber surface) and hit home with a rubber or hide mallet. You need to be careful otherwise you get one end fitted, the other not fitted and a bent aluminium strip.

You could try the other way round, strip & rubber resting on a timber surface, glass vertically above and hit the edge of the glass. Personally I'm not so keen on hitting the glass.

If you were doing a lot of them it would be worth making up a crude press so the force is applied evenly......

Thank you. I obviously need to apply more force!

    Here's a close up pic.

It looks thicker in section and that would make it difficult to fit. Did it come in a Blue bag with Britpart written on the label ??

Here is a picture of a piece of OEM rubber

    It worked!

It hasn't quite settled done near the bottom edge however.

I ended up up inserting the rubber on an angle so it would push in with the glass and still protrude above the alloy channel.

Hi Colin, it came as a loose window channel set. The rubber I also purchased for the truck cab window was in a Britpart bag however.

I have heard that Britpart Defender door seals are hard to fit. Probably a bit like the aftermarket Volkswagen Beetle quarter vent rubbers. I do a bit of work for a man who runs a VW Kombi restoration business every now and again and he has lots of trouble with the window rubbers not being manufactured to the same spec as the originals.
