You can never have too much play....

Ok so after a quick trip out in the Series this morning and whilst under a decent braking load I hear a loud bang,

After checking all my vitals to find no limbs were lost i trundled home,

jacked her up to find a decent amount of play on the off side front wheel.... holding the wheel top and bottom and rocking it, must be moving about 20-30mm

I'm assuming I have a shot bearing? but why the bang? not just a wurrring?

    thoughts?

Is it side to side as well? Get someone to apply the brakes and try it then. If it's still there then it is more likely a swivel or similar.

    hello John,

    thanks for the quick reply,

yes, there is play side to side as well, however i figured that might have just been in the steering??

i will try the with the brakes applied too,

if it is a swivel, would it make a bang under braking?

There will be some play through the steering. The thing about applying the brakes is it locks the wheel/hub assy, and thus eliminates the wheel bearing if the up and down play goes away. However, 20-30 mm is a lot, even taking into account the magnification created by the size of the wheel.

The 'bang' is worrying. I can't see any reason that a swivel, or a wheel bearing, would do that in what appears on the surface to be a well maintained car. That could be somewhere else. Remote diagnosis is so hard.

Still, try the brakes on thing first, and report back.....
