The trouble with distributors – even electronic ones – is that they are at the end of a mechanical-system, which wears and therefore alters the ignition advance. In addition the ignition advance is usually not programmable, some electronic distributors have selectable spark advance curves but it is always a compromise.

Megajolt is a computerised, programmable spark advance system, which in conjunction with a Ford Electronic-distributorless-ignition-system (EDIS) enables the engine to run without a distributor at all. Two ignition maps can be used, for example; one for LPG and the other for petrol. The owner can tune the maps using a laptop computer.

Timing for the static advance is taken from a trigger-wheel, which is installed on the crankshaft pulley; this eliminates the wear and ignition timing changes of the mechanical-chain.

If you can make things; like doing simple electrical repairs; can solder and want a Land Rover which never has ignition problems, Google Megajolt.

If you want to know how I converted my four cylinder car, send me a PM,

    Cheers Charlie

Jaycar sell an electronic ignition kit for use with points distributors. I last had one on a CM Valiant to replace the ELB box and I used a points distributor from an early 70's Hemi 215. I do not trust automotive electronics so wired the kit so it could be bypassed by swapping two wires and run on normal points and coil. You can get another kit from Jaycar that allows two ignition curves to be selected. Good for swapping between LPG & gasoline, or on blown engines to get boost retard in conjunction with a knock sensor.

I also did the conversion with a Powerspark kit on the army 6cyl with a bosch distributor - improved it a lot, especially cold starting. When that distributor died (due to massive endfloat) I bought their replacement 25D with a powerspark kit - this also works really well. I cant fault them so far.

I would prefer it to have the original Bosch in it, bu the rebuild the Bosch has been difficult - in the old dizzy I found 6 metal shims (meant to be 2) and 1 broken fibre washer (meant to be 2). I do have a brand new shaft for it, but it needs the drive dog pin hole drilled in it. Progress is slow.

Thanks for all the thoughts, I rebuilt the old Lucas last week, using OEM Parts, but haven't had a chance to fit it, that and still waiting on the HT leads... So be interesting to see how the original goes. My Accuspark worked really well until it pulled itself apart, so I'm sold on the concept (I had EI on an old V8 MGB and a 2CV of all things and worked a dream) but not convinced of the quality of Accuspark.

The crank driven system sounds like an interesting project, I'll certainly look that up, but priority for the minute is just to get moving!

    Cheers
