    Replacing front dumb irons

    Got the front of the S111 stripped down to replace rusty front chassis bits. I havn't got the replacement parts as yet. Would it be wise to make a jig to locate the position of the front eye bolts before i hack them off? Or, is plotting their positions with measurements enough?

    Positively, definitely, make a jig first.

    Assuming that the chassis is not damaged, you can use a jig running from the rear spring-hanger-eye to the front one. I turned two shafts to closely fit in the eyes – with no bushes in them – and welded them to a length of 10mm flat bar. The hanger can then be aligned to witness marks left on the chassis, whilst the jig takes care of the distance.

    While it is possible to do it by measurement, a jig can be made that is stiff and strong enough to hold the bits in place while they are welded, and this is far easier than doing it by measurement - and a lot more likely to end up with an accurate result.
