    Stage one brakes

2 Questions for the brains trust!
    1. Ive got a leaking rear wheel cylinder on my stage one, are they standard series 3 items or a stage one special?

    2. Ive got a variable pedal pressure..Normally its hard, then a noticeable clunk in the front end somewhere and noise, the pedal drops and all is good..Vacuum booster or perhaps incorrectly installed shoes or something else..I can feel the clunk through the pedal too..

Could be wrong but I thought the brakes were the same as the series 3 6 cylinder brakes? As for the inconsistencies - I'd go over everything t make sure it's seated and working properly - could be a shoe or spring not seated, or something more sinister.

Brakes are the same as the six cylinder ones. The clunk sounds to me like a loose wheel cylinder, but it could be a loose lining, or could be, as you suggest, the booster. Or just a sticky pedal shaft or sticky master cylinder. I'd be inclined to pull the front drums off and have a good look.

    Thanks John,
The lining on the front left has come away from the shoe and fell off with the drum when I removed it..this could explain some of the symptoms with a weird pedal feel.. I will put some new shoes on the front axle and see if that fixes things..

I would say you have found the problem! I assume it was a bonded lining that was no longer bonded. I don't suppose you have any knowledge of its history - for example, did the linings on the back come from the same source? If so, I would be seeking new shoes for them!

I think your right John..Brakes are one thing I won't compromise on..Its probably a good idea to replace all of the shoes..
Are there any better to go for than some? Ive found some britpart ones, but Im wondering if I should go to my local brake supplier and get some decent ones?

Your local brake supplier should be able to source some decent ones. I can dig out the part numbers for 'Clutch & Brake Australia' shoes if you need them. They will supply relined but need your shoes back and can also possibly supply new ones although I think they don't get the shoes manufactured any longer.

Not sure about Britpart shoes, purchased some a few years back & returned them as I was concerned about the friction material.

Go and see Matt at ACT Brakes in Phillip.

He's a really good bloke, knows Landies (he has two atm) and a bloody good mechanic, oh, and on the forum too.

He's under the pump atm, but I know he'd fit a Land Rover in.
Just don't tell him I said that, he'll call me a ****! Stage one brakes

I have used them in the past and they were OK - however they no longer do their own stainless sleeving or brake shoe bonding - now all sent away to do in Sydney.

ABS Brakes in Townsville Street in Fyshwich bought all the Morwood Motors Landrover Stock (still have the Morwood Sign outside) and did have suitable brake shoes but that was a long time ago so may not have them any longer - some of the staff do not realise they have old Landrover stock and just try to sell you stuff from their order books so you have to ask them to check their old stock.

Has been a long time since I bought series stuff from them but they might still have something. Failing that ACT brakes will get the old shoes relined but may take a few days.

While your at it, I got replacement cylinders from repco for $14 each when i had a Stage 1. Not worth messing around with.
    Made a big difference.
That was a while ago, made be bit more now.
