Hello from Brisbane.
I’m replacing the chassis and spring bushes on my 1975 Series 3 88”. This is using Super Pro bushes from Fulcrum. The kit is meant to be universal for Series Land Rovers, although I had to take it back once because part of the set for the shock absorber bushes were for a 109” rather than an 88”.
Moving on. I believe the front chassis bush is wider than the rear chassis bush and spring bushes. I seem to also recall seeing a post some time ago where it was suggested that the Series 3 trucks had a larger diameter front chassis bush.
Here’s the apparent problem and the question.
The chassis number on my truck matches the firewall plate number and is supposedly a Series 3. All of the other bushes fit easily - however the front chassis bushes in the kit look to be a wider diameter than the corresponding sleeve in the chassis by a reasonable margin. The bush is also a single piece bush which has to be compressed fit to install it or drawn through with some sort of puller. All the other bushes are two piece and were easily installed by hand. Getting the front chassis bush in is a bit of a challenge even if the diameters are right - harder if they aren’t.
So, the question is - are the bushes in an 88” chassis different to the 109” chassis bushes? Another is - we’re they differerent on a Series 2A 88” chassis?
Cheers,
Neil
Hello again and thanks.
Do you happen to know whether the bush diameter actually changed during the S3 production run or was different from the start of the model? As noted the chassis in my truck is meant to be it’s original (1975 S3).
The other thing that I am interested in finding out is whether the S2A front bushes are the same diameter as the rear chassis bushes and the spring eye bushes?
Cheers,
Neil

Hello again from Brisbane.
Thanks for the quick response.
That would make sense - as before, my chassis number seems to confirm that it was the original fitted to the truck which is definitely a Series 3. Likewise, my verniers are telling me that the poly bush diameter and the chassis tube are not the same. I just wasn’t sure if it was meant to be an ultra tight fit.....
I mentioned before that the kit was meant to be universal but the rear shock absorber bushes were for a 109” rather than an 88” truck. Presumably the whole kit may have been for a 109” - will be interesting to see if Fulcrum has a one piece bush in the smaller diameter. They seemed to be a bit surprised when I pointed out the difference for the rear shock absorbers.
Cheers,
Neil
Jim,
Thanks again.
Just been checking the Fulcrum/Super Pro site and they do have both those sizes for the upper shackle bush.
Even though they advertise the Land Rover kit as universal from S2A through S3 for both short and long wheelbase models - what was sent to me was a Series 3 long wheelbase kit based on the bush sizes for the chassis, springs and shock absorbers.
With a bit of luck I can swap the 38mm bushes for the correct 30mm bushes on Monday. Would have been nice if it had been correct from the get go.
Cheers,
Neil

Jim,
Thanks again.
Fulcrum are getting in a pair of the 30mm bushes to swap over for the larger bushes that came with the set. They recognise that the short and long wheelbase trucks have a couple of different types of bushes in their individual parts lists but had overlooked that for the front/rear sets.
Apparently they are planning to sort that out for the future - I guess they weren’t selling a lot of kits for the older trucks in recent years and so it didn’t get picked up.
Cheers,
Neil
