Thread: Spare wheel carrier for station wagon door

I recognise that 88"! Hi mike!
It might be a better option to try to source a swing away wheel carrier for the rear? The spare wheel puts a huge strain on the door hinges, particularly a series with only 2 hinges. A later Defender rear door has 3 hinges.
If you have no luck, I have a rear door carrier here that you could make one up from. They would not be that hard to copy.

Thanks - Looking at all options at the moment - just need to get the spare out of the cabin for camping trips (but I'm not prepared to admit there isn't enough room in an 88 - I just need to be more efficient!)

There is a great Aussie made product that pivots from the body, holds the spare wheel and is made of pipe. It allows the door to operate easily even holding it in place when opened requiring pushing in a spring loaded pin to shut. My mates 88 has one but I can't find a pic right now. The door does not take any weight at all and its been on there for 30 years now. There should be some around as they fit both the long and short with the swinging door.

Another way of overcoming the problem of the load on the door is to make a support mounted on the tow bar that the tyre sits on when the door is closed. I have seen one of these that was adjustable for height such that, when closing the door, the tyre simply slid up onto and took a lot of the weight off the door.
Just something to consider if you do end up mounting directly to the door.

Shipping and handling always a consideration but suffice to say the design is great, no weight on the door, we put a bit of chequer plate on the inside of the rear door panel to add a bit of strength, it probably didn't need it but it covered up a few pre existing holes.
