Thread: Front parabolic springs. 1977 SWB

Simple problems have simple solution. The spring (despite correct part code) is too short.
This morning I took one off - for the record the center pin is equidistant to both ends. I measured the spring for a total length of 875mm unladen.

This inspired me to read the repair manual. At the very back of section 4 are the specifications for the springs. Front springs are suppose to be 920mm (36.25 inches).
I am confident that this is the problem.

Can anyone recommend a Qld based supplier who would have the right length?

On my S2a 88, measurement from front of spring perch to centre of front spring bolt hole is 410mm.
Measurement from rear of spring perch to centre of rear bolt hole is 400mm.
Std rover springs.
Same both sides.
Useful info hopefully.
It is easy to miss the centre bolt hole in the spring perch as Goingbush said.

You're measuring eye to eye in a straight line, is that correct ? Or is it the length along the spring eye to eye ?

Looking at your spring shackle adding 45mm to the eye to eye length (in a straight line) will have the rear eye close to, if not touching, the chassis.

Is the pin in the other spring in the same position ?

P.S. Just noticed....it looks like the front end of the chassis has been replaced. Is this part of the problem ?

Im wrong, the front springs on a Series3 are equidistant from centre bolt to front & rear eyes. (just measured my old springs) .

The measurement in the manual does not apply to aftermarket springs , especially parabolic springs.
Eye to eye spring length vs what the manual says is definitely not your issue .

It look like the axle housing is not sitting on the centre bolt , on one or both sides , perhaps one side is behind the centre bolt & one is in front.

If you want to source a quality pair of parabolics , I suggest buying direct from GB Springs in UK , you will get them faster and a LOT cheaper than from any local supplier , and way better quality than the Britpart rubbish.

I have been involved in fitting parabolics to 4 various series vehicles - had issues with all of them rangeing form straight poor quality, wrong parts etc as mentioned above. Even to this day a series 1 still needs 200kg of ballast in the back - 109 HD supplied rather than standard and for various reasons it was simpler to stay with them.

I suggest you find someone who has had them installed and follow the brand etc they used.

After I fitted GB Parabolics to mine , which mind you was very straightforward & not any issues at all I decided to modify my shock mounts to accept P38 shockers so that I could take full advantage of the extra suspension travel allowed by the parabolics. Due to the thinner spring pack theres a tendency for existing shockers to bottom out if you hit a big enough hole , and they will def top out given the chance , which wont do any harm but do limit the travel.

Theres a thread on it here, mind I can see too many people doing this mod which takes the old series a bit far away from original for most, despite it being vastly better both on and off road.

I have fitted what look like exactly the same springs (same part number, though bought through Paddocks) to my SWB S111. I did not strike any problems. You are welcome to drop by and take some measurements if that would help (car is in Taringa).
