Thread: Seatbelt fitters in Melbourne

the series seat belts for the middle row of the station wagon are the same as the early defender/county ones that dont have the retracting type seatbelts.

the fronts are the same as a standard series. It wouldnt be too hard to refit either the OEM mounts or to put in the defender ones.

middle seat is as per the center seat in a deefer up to 07

the seatbelts were an option on the 72 so if you get oem series gear you dont need a compliance plate.

My understanding is that you would be wise to approach a VASS engineer to be sure. Vicroads can be tricky to deal with. VASS engineers come in different flavours, and various locations. There is nothing stopping you shopping around to find the simplest solution.

NB. The link provided speaks of Mass Management, but it provides a list of VASS engineers. I can't find the link I want. Even Vicroads website can be tricky.

1969 & 1970 -lap sash belts required fitted to outer front seats. 1971 - belts to all positions. It is a toss up whether it was Qld. or Vic. that first mandated wearing of belts where fitted. I remember New Year's Day 1971 in Surfer's Paradise the police having a blitz on drivers not wearing belts and issuing warnings that wearing belts was now compulsory.

As a matter of historic interest, seat belts did not attract sales tax which meant a change to the invoicing system used at GM-H for car sales to dealers.

Your 1972 wagon should already have the mounting points unless it was a 1970 build sold in 1971. Check your chassis no.

Seat belts come up a bit.
Maybe we need a sticky ?

1950landy I’ve sent a message to Seatbelt King. Based on their website they don’t say anything about fitting but they do supply seatbelts. I’m going to give VicRoads a call today and see if they can supply me with a list.

seatbelts can be replaced by any mechanic providing its like for like

seatbelts can be installed by any mechanic providing its using OEM hardware and OEM plans (apparently some vehicles have different seatbelt setups to comply with different countries regulations so just to make up an example if the mistotya 334 is deisigned to have self tensioning seatbelts in Australia but is legal with manual tension in middle burkistan and you bring a middle burkistan unit in because you like the colour better than whats available here I can fit the Aus complaint seatbelts for you).

IF you want a completely new seat fitted with a seatbelt or you want a seat modified with a new style of seatbelt... now you need a VASS approved engineer.

IF you go through the process Talk to your engineer, provide the concept brief show what you want to do and use, get it done (and I can do this bit) get it assessed then you're good to go.

my opinion...

as your should be fitting the SIII seat belts into a SIII with the factory sIII fittings you should be good to go by just fitting them in

fitting the defender stuff, (retractables) you'll need Vass approval.

There is a place in Campbellfield that should be able to do it, they make custom seats.

Thanks for the info. My SIII has seat belt points in the front row so I should just be able to fit those. I'll chat to an Engineer and see what to do for the middle and rear seats.
