    Series III engine rebuild

    Hi all,

I have a 1977 series 3 Landrover LWB with the original V6 engine. Its not running great and rather than spend time fiddling with different parts I might just bite the bullet and get it fully rebuilt. Can anyone recommend a garage in Melbourne? Also open to suggestions on replacing the engine as I wouldnt mind a something with a bit more grunt but I would prefer to keep it original.
    Thanks, Dave

Vehicle looks in excellent condition externally, although the engine bay is rather untidy so an engine rebuild might also give you the opportunity to clean up the engine bay while motor is out.
I'll leave it to others with local (Melbourne) knowledge to suggest where you might get the motor reconditioned.

The Rover V8 is a good base motor and will wake up with a rebuild, different cam, and alternate carburisation/ injection.
If it was mine I would spend the money on the original motor

Perhaps worth pointing out for any that are confused, that looks like a straight six, not a V6!

Well spotted John, I didn’t look at the engine
Still of the same opinion though.

    I know a guy......

might not be able to do the rebuild but can most likely give you a good heads up on condition and what it needs.

I would think more about which engine you want. The 6 cylinder is a wonderful engine but extremely thirsty. i believe they got around 12 miles per gallon when new and fuel was cheap. The fuel economy or lack of was the reason for a lot of Holden 6 cylinder conversions. But the holdens would break axles is used roughly.
I took a holden 6 out of mine and put a 4 cylinder in. It will be a little bit slower but is a very good engine other than top speed . although it does like visiting petrol stations often ....

Parts for the 6-cylinder motor are rare &/or expensive.
Best bet would be to see if the motor is OK and just needs tuning or exhaust valves replacing (they tend to burn exhaust valves). Blknight has offered to check it out so maybe send him a PM.

As suggested the 6-cylinder can be thirsty so an engine swap may be a better option although if you have to pay someone to do this it might be an expensive option. Keeping it 'original' would mean fitting a 4-cylinder 2.25 motor as suggested by Ian.

Not sure who would undertake motor reconditioning or a motor swap, Fred Smith Automotive in Bayswater is a possibility. It will be done properly but it could take a long, long time.......

Picture shows the aircleaner removed, hopefully it hasn't been run without an aircleaner.....if so this could be part of your problem.

I would be more inclined to go for the Rover 3 litre six.

Most were autos, is the crank the same on manual & auto ?

You also have to make modifications due to the Weslake head. Someone on here was fitting a Weslake head to a 2.6 and had to move the pedal box.
