    Lightweight S3, 1984 FFR on-road tyres

Warning; wheel and tyres sizes do my head-in!

I live up here in FNQ, during the wet our roads can be pretty slippery, especially driving up and down the Kuranda range!

I’m currently running Goodyear Hi-miler xtra grips on rims FV2000727, which I believe are pretty much the same as the civi version 231601. They are good for dirt roads and generally mucking about, but noisy and not the best on wet tarmic.

I have 5 spare rims (231601) that I would like to pop ‘proper’ road tyres onto, ones which are designed for on-road use, specifically for use during the wet!

So, couple of questions, any thoughts about running on-road tyres? And next, tyre size, I believe originally it would have had 6.50 x 16, but I understand that size is hard to come by now-a-days. Not sure if you can get on-road tyres at 7.00 x 16, or even 7.50 x 16?

Lastly, I’ve spoken to a couple of main stream tyre places, who basically were not interested and only had 7.50 sized all terrain tyres anyways. So any idea who sells and fits tyres up here (Cairns/Atherton tablelands) that aren’t mud, all-terrain 7.5s?

7.50x16 would be the easiest to get, but they are becoming harder to find. This size was used on a lot of light trucks as well as four wheel drives, so there should be a few about.

I am using Bridgestone Desert Dueller 604V 7.50x16 on both my Landrovers, and while these are not a pure on road tyre they perform better than the ones you have. But even these are getting a bit hard to find and are expensive.

I must be missing something, a search comes up with plenty of options for light truck wheels at every size imaginable, why can’t I just pop any of these on my rims?

you can just 'pop' them on your rims , just check the the loads rating is not too high or your landy will ride like an unloaded truck.

The have some Chinese 'Evergreen' brand 6 ply road tyres from tyroola running tubeless on a spare set of 'tube type' rims for my Lightweight and they are very good. They will fit any 16" Landy rim. They were only $70 each & I was so impressed I bought 2 more spares,

You need to make note of the 'ply rating', some of the LT tyres have 12 or more plies and are a bit harsh for a Landy.

Look out for Toyota Troopy 'take offs', normally brand new tyres that are taken off when the Toyota owned fits muddies. They use to be readily available in 7.50 X 16 but it's now a metric size.

These ones are a bit far away from you.

They come up on Gumtree regularly (down here anyway). Not noisy, OK in the wet when new, I have some secondhand ones on my SIII shorty and they are good for drifting in the wet but that's probably due to their age.

Hmm, "drifting in the wet" is exactly what I'm trying to avoid! I think I'll keep looking for a set of "road terrain" tyres thanks!

Any tyre where the compound has gone off will drift in the wet !

Best of luck finding suitable tyres.
