    Steering relay reassembly

    Hello from Brisbane.

I am presently reassembling the steering relay in my 88" truck - retaining the old housing but replacing the internal components with new or NOS parts.

I locally sourced a pair of genuine Land Rover thrust washers (part 624434) but note that they are slightly different to the original thrust washers that came out of the relay. The new washers have the same inner diameter as the old ones but have a smaller outer diameter and are thicker.

If the new washers are fitted in the relay I'm not sure that the end cover plates will actually mate flush with the end faces of the relay housing. The old ones would.

I'm inclined to go with refitting the old thrust washers which don't appear to be in too bad a condition, but thought it best to ask if there was an issue with that?

    Cheers,

    Neil

    Hi Neil,

Seems like Wayne is sorting you out but.....
I've never seen worn thrust washers, always re-fitted the old ones.

A parts manual shows a Series II relay thrust washer as pn241388, it seems this is correct up to 'early Series III'. 1973-84 is pn624434.
So it depends on the year of yours and whether the relay has been changed in the past.

    Colin,

    Hello and thanks.

My truck is a 1975 Series 3 and the chassis is the original that came with the truck. It’s possible that an earlier relay might have been fitted but it was well and truly stuck in there with an amazing accumulation of ancient crud - my sense was that if it had been changed it must have been yonks ago.

Anyway, the genuine Land Rover parts - 624434 - aren’t the same as what came out of it. As noted, the old ones look pretty good and will likely go back in.

    Cheers,

    Hello again.

Thanks to Wayne’s copy of an Army Series 3 manual the old washers were identified as being the correct dimensions although the part number was different to that shown in the factory parts manual - cited above. Whatever, the old ones are still OK and will go back into the refurbished relay.

Still seems odd that the parts that came wearing the factory number are not the correct specification. I guess Britpart doesn’t have a monopoly on supplying things that cost money and don’t fit.

    Cheers,

    Hi Neil,

As I mentioned in an earlier post, there must have been a change of design around 1973 as the thrust washer part number changes. If the part number changed it would probably be because the size changed.

The relay on yours might be original or could have been changed in the past.

This is from my Australian Army Repair Parts Guide for S3's Issue 2 Nov 82 20210630_083821parts.jpg It gives the dimensions of the washer. May be the P/N is the one the Aus Army gave it. It is the 1st one in the list.parts 2.jpg This will be easer to read (dam phone rotating photo)

    Hello again from Brisbane.

I’m pretty sure that the chassis in my 1975 S3 truck is the original based on the numbers. While having another relay isn’t beyond the realm of possibilities I’m also moderately confident that it is also the original that came with the chassis. If it had been replaced it must have been early on in its history because there was little evidence that it had been in or out of the chassis at any time.

I knew that the relays had changed at some times in the past - if not to get rid of the central filler which was prone to breakage. I’m a little surprised that the thrust washers changed in size because everything else seems to have remained pretty much unchanged other than that some of the aftermarket units are a loose fit on the bottom retaining ring.

My parts catalogue only shows one part number for the thrust washers rather than noting multiple numbers for variations in type, export destination etc. So, I pretty much took it that what arrived should have fit a Series 3 regardless of where it came in the model run.

Anyway, all academic now as the originals are going back into the beast - the old saying that “parts that play well together should stay together” applies here too.

    Cheers,

    Neil

The steering relay on Series Landrovers rarely develops significant wear - provided it is kept lubricated (with oil, not mud or grease).
