    Autosparks

    Hi,

I’m in the process of installing a new wiring harness in my 1975 Series 3 88” truck. In the main it’s going well enough but I’ve hit a few hurdles that I’d really welcome some informed advice with. Time’s not on my side to ponder over it too long because I’m trying to get it completed in time to take the vehicle to Cooma in only a few weeks time.

As a bit of background - the restoration project has involved a few upgrades over the original setup that impacts on the rewiring task. This includes (1) two speed wipers, (2) dual circuit vacuum assisted front brakes including the test light on the dash auxiliary panel, (3) hazard lights (4) twin fuel tanks and (5) Facit electric fuel pumps. The new Autosparks loom set includes allowances for most but not all of these upgrades - notably the two speed wipers are not included in the new loom or extension for the electric pumps.

The only Series 3 wiring diagrams that I’ve managed to access, including the official workshop manual, don’t include the first three of those modifications and the electric pump connection doesn’t really cover the complexity involved in getting the twin pumps and senders to operate seamlessly with a single flick of a two way toggle switch on the firewall. This includes switching the individual senders to the single fuel gauge in the instrument binnacle when either pump is selected.

I’m wondering if anyone around Brisbane has some recent experience with fitting a complete Autosparks harness to a Series 3 truck that included any of those modifications? Or have installed twin electric pumps with synchronised senders to the main fuel gauge? If you’re out there then I’m keen to meet.

    Cheers,

    Neil

the 2 pumps and senders on one switch is done with a double pole double throw switch. take the wire that goes to the normal single pump and wire it to the center of one side, same for the gauge wire then use the terminals of the output to goto the pumps and respective senders.

The 2 speed wipers setup can be pulled from the county(and I think stage 1) wiring diagram

Ive seen the 2 speed wipers driven by using the 2 speed blower fan circuit before.

Hope that helps. and if you need the help I'll be up brisbane way around the 26th or 27th.

Hello and thanks - genuinely appreciated.

It’s funny how the obvious approach can be overlooked when you get too bogged down in detail. Using the DPDT switch makes a lot of sense and I'll go that way. My error had been to start with a two way toggle switch - SPDT - for the two pumps that I already had and try to work the gauge senders from there which involved relays etc and a nominal solution that would have made Heath Robertson proud. Actually, an American I know had previously suggested much the same about a DPDT switch but at the time I missed the point of what he meant.

I will also run the pump power line to the switch through a Peel LPG cut off relay - that way if the engine stalls with the ignition still on (for example in an accident) the selected pump won’t keep pumping fuel. It won’t matter if the gauge is still connected.

    Thanks again.

    Cheers,

    Hello again and thanks.

Yes, I did briefly see the circuit diagram for a V8 Stage 1 which showed the extra wire for the second speed running from the rotary switch to the five pin plug on the motor. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a copy and haven’t found a downloadable version on the net since.

The technical guy from Autosparks sent me an email yesterday that confirmed that the new harness only included wiring for a single speed wiper but suggested running a single wire from the upgraded rotary switch to the motor which I will do. I had guessed that the set up was only single speed because the wiring and plug at the motor set up for both the old and new looms was identical even though I had specified that I was after the two speed arrangement. There is a spare pin on the motor but no corresponding wire to the plug for that terminal so fitting an extra wire wouldn’t be hard. Whether that’s sufficient remains to be seen because there’s a bit of historic chat on some of the UK forums that suggest an additional relay back at the switch might be necessary to get the park function to work.

No doubt this will be revealed in due course.

Actually if I can find the County diagram it might also throw some light on wiring the hazard lights and brake fail/test circuit. Anyone got an electronic copy?

    Cheers,

The perentie wiring is all bar identical to the county stuff.

You can get that from the afm website or remark.

Failing that if you're a little patient you can harsh me for a copy out of my archives

Just read your post we have a Series 3 Stage 1 with the 3.5 V8, after careful consideration we decided to go with a single fuel pump and utilised two manual 3 way valves to connect the two fuel tanks. I mounted the switches on the side of the drivers seat box so that when the levers were pointed to the front of the car we were connected to the front tank and pointed to the rear the back tank. We carry a second pump as spare, by not using a second pump this eliminated the need for further wiring. On the V8 the fuel pump runs constantly and there is a return line to tank for the fuel once the needles and seats close. I believe this was to reduce fuel usage on uneven ground where the needles and seats didn’t always seal thus using more fuel. For the fuel gauges we utilised a three pole switch from the power source to centre pole on switch and the tanks to the other two connections. So when mounted on the dash, the up on fuel sender switch became front tank and down rear. As for the wipers I managed to find a switch and motor assembly in a wreck I dismantled and installed those in our car, the switch for the wipers also operates the washers and this function wasn’t operational in our unit. Hope you get it sorted.
