My workshop manual says:
When refitted, the 'X' mark on the piston crown (where applicable) is to be toward the front of the engine, and the oil spray hole in the connecting rod toward the camshaft.

						SubscriberJust rebuilding an 2.25 petrol engine and realised I was unsure which side the oil hole on the conrod points - to the drive or the passenger side of the engine. I didn't take the engine apart so at least I have that excuse!.

Before reading that post, without looking anything up, I had the following chain of thought -
1. Heaviest load is on power stroke, and I assume this is when lubrication is most critical, with highest pressure
2. With the engine turning clockwise (from front), that means the reaction force from the angle of the conrod will be against the camshaft side of the cylinder
3. Hence, this is the side we want the oil squirted on!
