    Roamerdrive query

I had a Roamerdrive fitted to my Series 3 88” as part of a gearbox overhaul. I bought it at a Qld independent Rover outlet. It wasn’t new but apparently had only travelled a few thousand kms when fitted to the previous owners vehicle which was traded in on a Defender.

It runs fine under power but has developed a tendency to ‘go neutral’ on rapid deceleration - typically with the box in top gear but not under throttle when slowing down quickly at a T intersection or roundabout. More specifically, it slips from overdrive disengaged but positively driving into neutral - you only really notice it when you apply power to take off again and find it is in neutral with lever half position. It never does it when the unit is actually engaged in overdrive - lever forward. Probably done it a dozen or so times in a couple of thousand kilometres.

Anyone had a similar experience with their Roamerdrive? Or could shed light on what might be happening?

I had met the Roamerdrive guys in Vancouver including the owner Ray Wood and had previous correspondence with them about a couple of issues and found them to be very pleasant to deal with. Unfortunately, the business was sold to an Australian outfit and I have lost Ray’s direct contact details in Canada - as the developer and long time user I figured that he might recognise the symptoms more readily than the new owners. Could be wrong.

    Cheers.

There is a steel ball under the aluminium block on the side of the casing, which gives the positive action for engage/disengage. It may be worth checking that the ball is there with the spring that pushes the ball in to the indentations on the shaft under it? The detent spring is pretty stiff, and they normally have a fairly robust action to engage and disengage, and don't really want to position half way.

I haven't come across any issues with them wanting to jump out of gear.

    Thanks for those useful insights.

I’m just back home this morning from 8 weeks in Europe so will check it out when I’m back in the land of the living.

    Hello again.

Got to thinking about this possible cause of the problem - thinking also that the unit appears to be in fairly good condition and otherwise operates quite well.

I didn’t install it but one thing that I noticed is that when disengaged but driving (lever back) the lever is fairly close to the seat box and middle seat base. Wondering if the lever is not quite fully back and the detent ball actually solidly engaged?

Haven’t had a chance to get into the truck yet but that might be a place to start before pulling bits off the unit.

    Cheers

    Hello again.

I fiddled around with the orientation of the overdrive lever to get a slightly better clearance away from the middle seat. After driving about 650kms it only disengaged a couple of times and not at all in the last 300 or so. I am thinking that it might not have been coming aft enough to fully engage the detent - whereas now you definitely feel the detent engage.

One small thing that might have helped in the last case was that I replaced the large Roamerdrive lever knob with a green knob sourced from a UK outlet that matches the yellow and red knobs. This gets the lever further back towards the seat cushion without fouling with it.

    Cheers
