Any engine rebuilder, there must be a few around Dandenong and Springvale.
Where are folks buying major engine parts these days. S3 4 cyl. Mainly asking about rings and bearings. All the rebuild shops I used to know are gone with the Thylacine... Might be one or two, but i can't find one.
Online stores are fine, as long as I can trust they will supply the correct over/undersize.

If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
There used to be heaps. All the ones I knew are, as I said, extinct. Even head shops are harder to find. I can keep looking, but I was thinking someone like Colin might know of a LR friendly place. My local guru has turned into a pumpkin for the hols.
Once again, Ian, I am thinking out loud. But the thing is probably worthless not running.

Some years ago I struggled finding rings for the 2.6 in my FFR.
They came from Canada in the end via Ebay, although a mate in the UK found 2 sets. Couldn't find them locally.
There's the place off Rooks Road, Auto Surplus. They buy up job lots but......they can be a tad expensive.
Dandy Rebores shut some years ago, I did find a place in Carrum Downs but had to explain to them what an F-head motor was !
Talking to the owner of Dandy Rebores a few years before they shut and he summed it up.
Most people nowadays will scrap a car or get a secondhand motor fitted if the engine fails. He commented, 'old blokes' doing up cars are the only people wanting rebores, and they typically baulk at the cost.
HM GEM are still going but mainly working on large engines nowadays.

If you're doing it yourself, best bet is the UK suppliers, I've had no problems with Paddocks over the years. Typically **itpart but that's what everyone else is selling. Plenty of other suppliers to try and freight isn't all that expensive and delivery typically fast.
You may need to remove the ridge at the top of the bore, I did this using hand scrapers on my 6-cylinder. Apparently you can get 'ridge cutters' but you'd have to hire from an engine reconditioner.
A quick hone to help the rings bed in and you're in business.
Paddocks list+.010", +.020", +.030" & +.040" at around $15 per set.
Piston rings - 010 o/s - per piston - 2.25 Petrol - Paddock Spares
Similar sets locally $45 or more per piston set ! Probably from the same supplier.....
Piston & Rings from Paddocks are around $45 to $55 each.
Shell bearings also resonably priced.Big End Shells 010 - Paddock Spares
VRS Gasket set Head Gasket Set 4cyl - 4cyl Petrol - Paddock Spares
When ordering it's worth getting extra parts to share the freight costs. Probably why I have so much 'in-stock' !
If you can't find what you want on the Paddocks website look up the Land Rover part number then search Paddocks using that number. Often the part is there but not on the 'front end'.

Dandy rebores did a ford engine for me. I used to own a ring ridge remover. I think it came off the Ark, or out of a pyramid. I have seen those sets from the UK. I guess that's logical. Thanks for the comprehensive reply.Colin. Guess I'll be looking foe an inside mic, or T-bore

The size (or oversize) should be marked on the piston crown. Inside micrometer or telescope gauges & outside micrometer might help determine the amount of wear.
I managed to borrow a bore comparator when I worked on my 2.6 motor. It was at the wear limit but I couldn't justify rebuilding the motor, although now I have NOS shells & pistons in stock, so I could.
If you're doing the work just to sell the vehicle then I do wonder whether it would really add to it's value.
Will it run at the moment ?
I'd be tempted to get it running & moving if you just intend to sell. If it smokes.....so be it.

I have one of those ridge removing tools, I bought it new about 30 years ago when I rebuilt a 186 Holden motor to go in my old series 3. I paid about $90 for it and only used it once. Feel free to borrow it or buy it for what I paid. American made.IMG_0258.jpgIMG_0259.jpg
On reflection, if someone has a genuine need I will discount the price by $90![]()
