Give me a couple more weeks and I'll have the gearbox to transfer case sorted, then I can tell you how to set up a Daihatsu 2.8 and 5 speed overdrive box from a Delta series truck, to power an S3 Landy.
With luck I should not even have to play with engine or gearbox mounts.

Not daft at all. Nice engines. Love the old 2.25D.
As it was a 6 cyl I am assuming it is a 109 so the LR2.2.5D may be a little underpowered... but then again... with extractors (need to let these oiler breathe) and injector pump tweaks should go well.

Who would I determine which engine is a Series3 diesel from any other 2.25ltr. Are there specific engine numbers to look for??

Rodeo 2.8l turbo intercooled, the last of the non electronic ones.Good strong engines, mates rodeo has 350000ks on it still going strong, get the gearbox/transfercase then everything matches, tailshafts and handbreak to sort.
Avoid mitsi 4D56/4D55 (triton/pajero) they are hand grenades.
That 2.8 diahatsu is actually a toyota under licence.
Hilux diesels up to 2.8 are reasonable.
Nissan 3.3 diesel with the turbo was pretty strong.
Landcruiser 6cyl diesels are real gutless.
