Thread: Bit of trouble

Sounds like possibly the ignition timing has slipped or it has at least one cylinder misfiring (and accumulating fuel in the exhaust, which then burns), possibly due to either a faulty plug or lead or cracked distributor cap, or a stuck or broken valve.

Yeah i got it running today. I replaced the ignition coil and got genuine points for it a new condenser and leads new dizzy and made a new earth lead from the coil to the dizzy. But after putting it all together i found out that the distributor cap is cracked just were the main lead to the ignition coil goes. So im thinking thats y it running on 3 cylinders.

Just Replaced the dizzy cap today and found that it seems to still do it. What it does is it starts running alright then it will start jerking around and backfiring and blowing flames and really playing up im really stoked really dont no what the problem is i mean everything is replaced.

Have you checked the fuel filter?

I had a school bus come into the workshop one day that sounded like you described. I changed everything like you and spent the day thinking and scratching my head.

By chance I decided to change the fuel filter and it ran like a dream.

Thinking about it after reading Nev's post, anything that gives a weak mixture, not just the fuel filter, can give these effects. This includes leaking gasket on the intake manifold or under the carburetter, or a blocked passage in the carburetter, or a faulty fuel pump or the pickup screen in the tank blocked.
