It may not change the consumption but it will halve the cost of fuel.

Your 20/80Km would usually be stated as 25L/100 Km and is at the upper end of fuel consumption of a V8.

Firstly I would be looking for fuel leaks, then adjusting the carby and after that go through the other usual suspects, timing, spark plugs and possibly compression tests. (has it been tuned for unleaded, if not it may need to be.)

Believe it or not, it was converted to LPG, but the old man pulled it out cos he reckoned it made it too sluggish...
Been thinking about going back to LPG definitely.

Someone recently told me that changing Carburettors would increase mileage without decreasing performance - anyone know if such a thing is likely? Any good candidates?

I use to have a 6cyl - excessive fuel consumption could be a vacuum leak, head gasket or partially burnt valve. If it's hard to start then you have to go looking for these things too: points, plugs and timing. If you have an adjustable carby jet, don't lean it out past specs: that is the sure way to burn a valve - I know that the hard way.

While changing the carburetter may improve mileage, fixing the problem, which may well be the carburetter, will also be effective.

Almost all reports of improvements from changing the carburetter on any vehicle compare a defective carburetter with a new one.

If this increase in consumption has been a sudden change, it will have a fixable cause. My guess is a burnt exhaust valve, probably number six, but any of the suggestions by langy could be the problem.

Changing the carbs are more difficult on the Rover 6 than it is on the Rover 4s because of the "side draught" style of the head/manifold.

The main options are the Stromberg which should be on it originally or an SU which were on the Forward Control 6's and the Rover Cars. I don't know someone to fix the Stromberg but Midel in Lakemba NSW are the ones to see for SU products and overhauls.

On a side note, I have an army driver handbook for the 6 cyl land rover, I think it was 17L/100km highway, but i'd have to check. I think they said 280 km from the standard tank, so that would be about right.

It would be worth adjusting the valves,these motors seem to require it more than usual.
Dont forget the exhausts are in a seperate rocker cover in the side of the block.

I should have read the info on the website I quoted - Midel actually do service and supply parts and kits for the Stromberg CD carbies.

Other products if anyone's interested are Zenith carbies, SU electric fuel pumps and Facit electric fuel pumps etc.
