    Door swap: IIA to III

I have a SIII LWB hardtop with rust in both front doors top and bottom.
This morning I scored a virtually rust-free IIA (Driver's side) door at the wreckers.

I now need to do a latch & lock swap.

It seems to me that if I were to drill the hole for the SIII door key-lock, most everything else will be OK.

    Am I missing anything?

    cheers

Yes, you are missing something. The Door stop.

You could possibly make up something - like a couple of strips of flatbar connected by a bolt (so they work like a hinge).

    Yep. You're right.
I had thought about that, though I'd neglected to mention it in the post.

    cheers

It is probably possible to cut the door check slide off your old door and weld or rivet it to the new door. Other alternatives are to look at fitting an early 110 door check, or you could do what was often done on Series 1 doors - fit a leather strap which folds as the door is shut, although this will need replacing at regular intervals.

    Umm, the hinges?

Doesn't the III use a hinge like the Defender?

Yup! Hinges are completely interchangeable - holes are in exactly the same place, and are the same size. Nothing to stop you putting S3 hinges on your S2/2a or vice versa. Interestingly, so are the bonnet hinges, and in fact my 2a is currently wearing S3 doors and bonnet.

I was thinking seat belt webbing would be a cheap and suitable strap material.

John's quite right. I'm leaving the SIII hinges undisturbed, and just putting the bolts through the SIIA door. No probs there.

Along with the driver's door I scored the hinges, so if there's a SIIA restorer in Brisbane who'd like them, PM me. I'm also swapping in the SIII door handle/lock, so again there's that SIIA unit looking for a home too.

    cheers
