Series Landrovers and their major components such as engines, gearboxes and axles all have serial numbers, and these usually end in a single letter. This letter changes with significant changes to the component (or whole vehicle), so that if you are looking for parts or to make sure that you have a particular upgrade, you need the letter, although (usually) the rest of the number does not matter. The suffix is not necessarily the same for the vehicle, engine, gearbox, axles - they could all be different (even when it came from the factory).
(The Series 2A designation comes from first added letter to the vehicle serial number in Series 2 production. Confusingly, the term "2A" continued even as the suffix letter changed, so you have Series 2A vehicles with the suffix up to "H", except the term "2B" was used for the later forward control version, which had a lot less in common with the standard 2a.)
