    Holy Diff

    Just stripping down the front of my reno project and I have noticed that the front diff housing is different from the rear... what are the two holes in the bottom of my front diff (from a Series 3) for?

    This is the later style rangie/90/110 casing. It was made so that you could bolt on a track rod protector (coillers run track rods at the back).

    Check it doesn't have a 3.54 centre. But some late model SIIIs had these casings from the factory.

    I had assumed that it was some kind of 'drain'; there appears to be a hole on the inside roughly where the oil seal sits... sorry, what's a '3.54' centre?

    No, they are not drains. They do not connect to the oil gallery at all.

    3.54:1 is the alternate ratio (fitted to all coilers, and SIII Stage 1s)

    4.7:1 ratio diffs were fitted to all series (except SIII Stage 1s)

    How do you tell - does it actually say that on the diff somewhere?

    Divide the number of teeth on the crownwheel by the number of the pinion teeth. The Range Rovers use those holes to mount the steering damper.

    OK, thanks, I'll try and get a count later... I'll have to track down something to mark it with, otherwise I may keep going around and around counting!

    What Dan said. Series diffs have 47 crownwheel and 10 pinion.


    You can see a small steel track rod guard bolted to those holes in this image.

    Not mine, but I think that one is made by rockware in the US. It is a bit like an inverted front salisbury track rod.
